Local Government Reorganisation
The Government has confirmed that local government across Lancashire will be reorganised, with the current 15 councils being replaced by four new unitary councils covering North, South, East and West Lancashire from April 2028.
If you are successful in your application, you will initially join Lancashire County Council. However, as part of the planned transition, your employment will transfer to one of the new unitary councils from April 2028, subject to the implementation of the reorganisation and relevant employment legislation.

Location: Farington HWRCs
Days of Work: Tuesday - Saturday
Hours: 37 plus 3 hour contractual overtime. Weekend enhancement

What You'll Do
As a Site Operative, you'll play a key role in the day-to-day operation of our Household Waste Recycling Centres, helping customers safely dispose of their waste while promoting recycling and reuse.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Welcoming and assisting customers using the site.
- Providing advice on recycling and waste disposal.
- Supporting customers with unloading waste and recyclable materials.
- Promoting reuse and helping maximise recycling rates.
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and well-presented facility.
- Operating site equipment and mechanical plant following training.
- Ensuring health, safety, and environmental standards are maintained.
- Working as part of a team to deliver an essential public service.
- Working in a shop environment through our site located residents re-use facility.

Previous waste management experience is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.
Training & Development
We'll support you to gain the skills needed to succeed, including training and competency qualifications such as:
- First Aid
- Mobile and mechanical plant operation
- Site safety and operational procedures

Additional Information
The role involves outdoor working, customer interaction, manual handling, and Bank Holiday working as part of operational requirements. You may also be required to work at other nearby recycling facilities to support the service.
