Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and friendly Housekeeper to join our team at The Poplars, Hemsworth, Wakefield. If you have a passion for delivering high standards, are keen to work in a dynamic team, and are adaptable to varied working hours, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

Role Responsibilities

The Housekeeper will maintain cleanliness and infection control standards across the site, working as part of the housekeeping team or independently within the unit. Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring all clinical and non-clinical areas, including patient wards and public areas, are cleaned to the highest standards.
  • Maintaining high cleaning standards of wards and departments, working with other housekeepers, assistants, and various wards and department areas to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
  • Cooking and serving meals to service users.
  • Maintaining correct stock levels in ward stores and main stock areas.
  • Meeting deadlines and working under pressure.
  • Demonstrating good customer service and communication skills.

Requirements

  • A proactive attitude with excellent cleaning skills and a can-do attitude.
  • A good working knowledge of COSHH and awareness of the use of color coding in the NHS would be useful.
  • All employees are strongly encouraged to have their up-to-date flu vaccination.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide a high standard of catering and general housekeeping duties within a mental health inpatient environment.
  • Carry out duties in line with national standards of cleanliness, infection prevention & control, and food safety.
  • Prepare and serve meals and snacks to service users, ensuring food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the unit environment, including bedrooms and common areas.
  • Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and service users.
  • Adhere to Trust policies and procedures, including safeguarding and confidentiality.

Key Result Areas

  • Catering Duties:

    • Provide full meal and snack services to service users.
    • Receive and store food in accordance with set standards.
    • Prepare and pack menu items to the required standard.
    • Serve meals and sundry items of food adhering to food distribution timescales.
    • Wash all items, including tableware, following each meal service.
    • Maintain unit catering department cleanliness.
    • Communicate with multidisciplinary teams for special diets.
    • Maintain accurate records for food storage and regeneration.
    • Prepare for meal times ensuring menus are displayed.
  • General Housekeeping Duties:

    • Contribute to the safety, efficiency, and general tidiness of the whole unit environment.
    • Maintain adequate supplies of stock and ad hoc items on the wards.
    • Prepare bedrooms for admissions to the ward.
    • Support service users to keep their own property safe and use laundry equipment as required.
    • Report defective or damaged items and arrange for the removal of items.
    • Undertake routine and ad hoc environmental and equipment checks and audits.
    • Maintain cleaning of items as per ward schedules.
    • Spot clean throughout the ward as required.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Personal Attributes: Smart appearance, ability to work as part of a team, flexible approach to working patterns, caring, friendly attitude, ability to deliver high standards of work.
  • Physical Attributes: Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post, satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years.
  • Special Knowledge/Skills: Good interpersonal skills, ability to communicate with service users, work colleagues, and visitors, ability to work without immediate supervision, positive can-do attitude.
  • Training: Commitment to undertaking relevant training.
  • Experience: Previous experience of working in a demanding work environment.
  • Qualifications: Level 2 Certificate in Food Safety or willing to undertake and successfully complete within 12 months, basic literacy and numeric skills.

Desirable

  • Basic Health & Safety awareness.
  • Previous experience of working in an industrial cleaning and/or catering environment.
  • Experience within a customer care or patient-focused environment.
