An excellent opportunity has arisen with a leading defence technology organisation for an HPC Infrastructure Engineer to help shape and develop high-performance computing capability across a large, technically complex engineering environment.
This role sits within a specialist information management function and offers the chance to work across HPC infrastructure, Linux, storage, networking and emerging technologies, supporting engineering teams with the platforms they need to tackle demanding computational workloads.
The Role
You will contribute to the development of the organisation's long-term HPC capability, helping define infrastructure strategy while remaining close to the technical detail of how these environments are designed, built and operated.
Working with internal engineering teams and technology partners, you will be involved in areas including:
- Designing and developing large-scale HPC environments across compute, storage and networking
- Supporting CPU, GPU and accelerator-based platforms
- Developing high-performance networking solutions using technologies such as InfiniBand, RDMA and high-speed Ethernet
- Designing storage environments including parallel file systems, object storage and tiered architectures
- Helping shape the roadmap for future HPC technologies and infrastructure
- Establishing technical standards, reference architectures and engineering best practice
- Supporting workload management and orchestration technologies such as SLURM and Kubernetes
- Working with HPC software stacks including MPI, CUDA, compilers, libraries and container technologies
- Analysing system performance, capacity and scalability to identify potential bottlenecks
- Working with engineering teams and external technology suppliers to ensure HPC services continue to meet evolving requirements
- Providing technical guidance across the wider HPC engineering and operations environment

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
