HPC Network Engineer – Systematic Hedge Fund | London
A tech-led systematic hedge fund is seeking an HPC Network Engineer to design and evolve the high-performance networking infrastructure underpinning large-scale research, trading, and compute environments.
This is a highly technical role focused on HPC networking rather than traditional enterprise data centre networking, working on the fabrics that connect large-scale compute and storage platforms where throughput, latency, congestion management, and network efficiency are critical to overall system performance.
You'll work across modern high-performance Ethernet environments, with significant exposure to RDMA/RoCEv2, while helping evolve the underlying network architecture as the firm's compute requirements continue to scale. The role combines deep hands-on networking with architecture, performance optimisation, automation, and close collaboration with infrastructure and research teams.
The Role
- Design, build, and optimise high-performance network fabrics supporting large-scale HPC, research, and trading workloads
- Engineer scalable, resilient Ethernet infrastructure for demanding compute and storage environments where network performance is critical
- Work hands-on with RDMA and RoCE-based networking, optimising the network for high-throughput, low-latency traffic
- Contribute to the design and evolution of RoCEv2-based HPC fabrics and associated network architectures
- Investigate complex performance issues across the network and compute stack, including latency, throughput, congestion, packet loss, and reliability
- Optimise network behaviour to maximise performance across large-scale compute and storage platforms
- Design and deploy modern spine-leaf fabrics, including EVPN/VXLAN-based architectures where appropriate
- Work closely with infrastructure, compute, storage, and research engineering teams to understand workload requirements and translate them into network solutions
- Evaluate networking hardware, ASIC capabilities, buffering behaviour, optics, and other components that influence HPC network performance
- Drive automation across the network estate using Python, Go, Ansible, and software-driven engineering practices
- Develop monitoring and observability capabilities to understand network health, performance, and capacity at scale
- Contribute to major infrastructure programmes and the continued evolution of the firm's HPC platform

Requirements
- Strong experience designing, building, and supporting HPC or high-performance network environments
- Hands-on experience with RDMA/RoCEv2
- Strong understanding of high-performance Ethernet and the networking considerations required for large-scale compute environments
- Experience troubleshooting network performance issues across latency, throughput, congestion, packet loss, and application behaviour
- Deep knowledge of modern data centre networking, including EVPN/VXLAN, routing, switching, and resilient fabric design
- Experience with HPC-specific network optimisation and performance analysis
- Strong understanding of switch architecture, ASICs, buffering models, and hardware performance characteristics
- Experience supporting network infrastructure for large-scale compute, storage, research, or similarly performance-sensitive workloads
- Knowledge of physical data centre infrastructure including optics, fibre, cabling, airflow, cooling, and power
- Automation experience using Python, Go, Ansible, or similar tooling
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to investigate issues across multiple layers of the technology stack
- Comfortable working closely with compute, storage, and research engineers to diagnose and optimise end-to-end performance
- Exposure to emerging HPC networking technologies and next-generation network architectures
