More about the role
HR advisory work in Central Bedfordshire Council offers an extraordinary range of experiences for an ambitious professional who is looking to build on their employee relations experience.
We’re now expanding the team to respond to organisational change but also to provide a more proactive service.
You’ll be advising and coaching managers to resolve people issues across a wide range of different services and occupations in a unionised environment. The Council is also undergoing significant change as it embeds a One-Council approach and seeks to deliver an ambitious financial plan, and you’ll be contributing to the implementation of this change.
You’ll be part of a small, busy but supportive team and we can guarantee you the broadest range of disciplinary, grievance, capability and change management experience to complement your CV.
You’ll need to have some prior employee relations advisory experience (ideally in the public sector), with good influencing and communication skills and sound practical knowledge of employment law, preferably underpinned by an HR qualification.
We offer the opportunity to work both from home and from our offices but the nature of this role means that there will be frequent attendance on Council premises across the CBC area and you’ll need to have access to a car or be able to reliably travel around Central Bedfordshire to attend meetings and appointments.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
