Role Purpose

Acts as the first point of contact for managers and employees, providing advice, support, information, and Employee Relations (ER) case management. Delivers an efficient, confidential, and highly respected HR service to employees at all levels, ensuring compliance with employment legislation, internal policies, and best practice.

Supports activity to drive the HR strategy, drive engagement, and help embed the company values to create a culture where individuals can perform to their best.

Day in the Life of HR Advisor

A typical day for an HR Advisor is dynamic and varied, often beginning with providing advice and support to managers and employees as the first point of contact for HR queries. The day may include attending disciplinary meetings, reviewing investigation reports, and drafting outcome letters to ensure fair and compliant resolution of employee relations matters. Alongside these core ER activities, the HR Advisor supports organizational change initiatives such as TUPE, helps update company documentation, and coaches line managers and team members to build capability and maintain high standards across the HR function.

Key Responsibilities

HR Service & Employee Relations (ER)

  • First point of contact for managers and employees, providing advice, support, and information.
  • Deliver a respected, professional HR service that supports effective and efficient business performance in line with the People Strategy.
  • Provide specialist HR advice, guidance, and administrative support in line with employment law and company policies on key people matters, including disciplinaries, grievances, and employee health issues.
  • Effectively manage the ER process from start to finish, ensuring all elements are uploaded and recorded on the ER tracking system (CaseNest).
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with managers and employees to positively influence outcomes and demonstrate added HR value.
  • Treat employees fairly, in line with best practice and legislative requirements, while meeting business needs to limit employment tribunal risks.
  • Support business change activities, including change, restructure, and TUPE.
  • Oversight of customer complaints, ensuring thorough investigation and liaising with customers regarding outcomes; use discretion for goodwill gestures.

Training & Development

  • Support training and development of line managers and employees through one-to-one coaching and creation/delivery of face-to-face and e-learning training.

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Support Management with Recruitment & Onboarding, participating in interviews and supporting onboarding process.

Learning and Development

  • Support training and development for line managers and employees through coaching and delivery of face-to-face programs.
  • Identify and implement improvements for HR processes and practices to drive continuous improvement.

Policy Development & Compliance

  • Stay abreast of changes in employment legislation and ensure HR policies and practices comply with UK employment laws.
  • Support the updating of company documentation, including employee and officer handbooks, policies & Procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with GDPR legislation.

HR Metrics and Reporting

  • Compile and analyze HR metrics to monitor key performance indicators, identify trends, and provide insights to help inform decision-making.

General Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of the HR People Strategy and lead HR projects to support business and HR objectives, demonstrating effective project management skills.
  • Work closely with other team members to ensure the highest possible standards of administration and advice.
  • Identify and implement improvements for HR processes and practices.
  • Ensure all data on manual and computerized records are accurate and up to date.
  • Provide oversight and coaching support to team members to develop knowledge and capability across the team, acting as an escalation point.
  • Support administration and HR Administrators with workload as required.
  • Carry out any other reasonable and relevant duties as required by the business.

Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience operating as a HR Officer/Advisor - With proven experience of advising managers and the business on ER matters and Recruitment.
  • CIPD qualified ideally to Level 5 or equivalent experience.
  • A level standard qualification / Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient and experienced at working with HR and recruitment systems.
  • A sound understanding of the principles of good HR practice and knowledge of employment law.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of all aspects of the employee lifecycle and able to advise accordingly.
  • Good project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to deal effectively with all levels of people internally and externally through verbal and written communication.
  • Highly motivated with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Understand and respect sensitivity of HR information to ensure confidentiality.
  • Previous exposure to a fast-paced environment.
  • Resilient, adaptable, and flexible; able to show initiative and manage own workload.
  • Excellent MS Office skills.
  • Experience supporting TUPE transfers advantageous.
