Employment Type: Permanent

Location: Middlesbrough

Hours of Work: Full-time, Monday - Friday.

Benefits: 25 days holiday plus 8 days bank holiday, single person medical cover and a non-contractual bonus of 10%.


We are looking for an experienced HR Manager to provide professional HR leadership, advice and support across the business. The role will be responsible for delivering a proactive and commercially focused HR service, supporting managers and employees across the full employee lifecycle while ensuring compliance with Company policies, procedures and current UK employment legislation.

The successful candidate will be a confident HR professional with strong Employee Relations experience and the ability to build effective relationships at all levels of the organisation. They will demonstrate sound judgement, strong communication and influencing skills, and a proactive approach to supporting business objectives and developing effective people practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day HR advice and guidance to employees and managers across a broad range of HR matters, including Employee Relations, disciplinary and grievance processes, absence and performance management, flexible working, maternity and organisational change.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with managers and employees at all levels.
  • Manage sensitive and confidential employee matters with professionalism, integrity and discretion.
  • Provide guidance and support throughout the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, employee development and offboarding.
  • Lead and support Employee Relations cases, ensuring appropriate processes are followed and matters are managed fairly and consistently.
  • Support managers in the effective implementation of HR policies, procedures and best practice.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate employee records and HR data, producing regular and ad hoc HR reports and statistics as required.
  • Review and contribute to the development and implementation of HR policies and procedures, ensuring they remain effective and compliant with current UK employment legislation.
  • Support and lead HR projects and initiatives aligned with wider business and people objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve HR processes, employee engagement and the overall employee experience.
  • Provide HR input into business planning, organisational change and other commercial initiatives as required.
  • Work collaboratively with wider HR and management teams to ensure a consistent and effective approach to people management.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of UK employment legislation and HR best practice, advising the business on relevant changes and requirements.

Minimum Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours)

  • Proven HR management or senior HR advisory experience.
  • Strong Employee Relations experience, including disciplinary, grievance, absence and performance management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships at all levels.
  • Strong influencing, negotiating and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret HR data and produce clear, accurate reports.
  • Strong understanding of UK employment legislation and HR best practice.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and HR systems.
  • Customer-focused with a high level of personal accountability, confidentiality and integrity.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a wider team.
  • Strong commercial and business awareness, with the ability to align HR activity with wider business objectives.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing workloads and priorities while maintaining high standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • CIPD Level 5 qualified or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable experience working within a HR management or senior HR role.

Desirable Qualifications/Competencies

  • CIPD Level 7 qualification or working towards.
  • Degree in HR, Business Management or a related subject.
  • Experience working in a unionised environment.
  • Experience within a complex or fast-paced operational environment.
  • Experience leading HR projects and supporting organisational change.
