Employment Type: Full-time (40 hours per week) - option for part time
Role Overview
We are a fast-growing, people-first business with 60+ employees across retail, warehouse and HQ. We are looking for an experienced HR Manager to take ownership of the people function at Goose & Gander and help support the next phase of our growth.
This is a hands-on role with responsibility for the full employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding through to performance, development, engagement and employee relations.
You will work closely with the CEO, founders and management team while being a visible and approachable point of contact for employees across the business.
We are specifically looking for someone who has previous experience within a growing, founder-led business and understands the pace, flexibility and hands-on approach required. You will bring structure and consistency where needed without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy, helping us retain our culture as we scale.
Key Responsibilities
HR Management & Employee Relations
- Own the day-to-day HR function across retail, warehouse and HQ.
- Provide practical and commercially considered HR advice to employees and managers.
- Manage employee relations matters including performance, absence, disciplinaries, grievances and capability.
- Coach and support managers to confidently manage their teams and people-related issues.
- Maintain HR policies, processes, contracts and employee documentation, ensuring compliance with UK employment law.
- Monitor key people metrics including absence, turnover and retention, identifying trends and areas for improvement.

Recruitment & Employee Lifecycle
- Own and improve recruitment and onboarding across the business.
- Partner with managers on hiring needs, role requirements and workforce planning.
- Ensure new starters receive a consistent and engaging onboarding experience.
- Manage key employee lifecycle processes including probation, promotions, salary changes and leavers.
- Develop effective exit and feedback processes to improve employee experience and retention.
People, Culture & Development
- Champion Goose & Gander’s people-first culture as the business grows.
- Work with the founders and management team to ensure our values remain embedded in how we recruit, manage and develop our people.
- Develop initiatives to improve employee engagement, communication, recognition and wellbeing.
- Build effective performance management and development processes across the business.
- Support managers with performance conversations, development plans and progression.
- Identify training and development needs and help create clear progression opportunities.
People Strategy & Growth
- Act as a trusted people partner to the CEO, founders and management team.
- Develop a people plan that supports the wider business strategy and growth ambitions.
- Introduce appropriate structure and processes while protecting the agility and culture of a founder-led business.
- Use people data and feedback to identify risks and opportunities across retention, recruitment, engagement and performance.
- Support organisational change and evolving team structures as the business scales.
- Build an HR function that can continue to grow alongside Goose & Gander.

What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Must have previous experience working within a growing, founder-led business.
- Proven experience as an HR Manager, People Manager, HR Business Partner or similar generalist role.
- Strong knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice.
- Experience independently managing employee relations matters including disciplinaries, grievances, absence and performance.
- Experience across recruitment, onboarding, performance management and employee development.
- Confident partnering directly with founders, senior leaders and managers.
- Able to introduce structure and consistency without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
- A genuine people-first mindset combined with strong commercial awareness.
- Proactive, organised and comfortable taking ownership in a fast-moving environment.
- Strong communicator who can build trusted relationships with employees at all levels.
