Position: HR Manager

Location: SE1, London - 4 days at our Head Office, 1 day remote

Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum, plus a potential 15% discretionary bonus

Department: People Team

Reporting to: People Director

Position Overview:

We are looking for a hands-on and experienced HR Manager to take ownership of day-to-day HR operations and employee relations across our shops and support office, while supporting the delivery of wider people initiatives. This is a true generalist role where you will support the delivery of agreed people initiatives, helping us build an exceptional, high-performing and inclusive culture.

You’ll work closely with the People Director, Head of L&D, Talent Manager and Content Manager to support us on our mission to make Black Sheep Coffee one of the best places to work on the high street.

You will directly manage the HR Coordinator to ensure the employee life-cycle, our people processes, systems and practices are best in class.

Responsibilities:

Employee Relations

  • Oversee, support and lead ER matters and support complex cases with the Head of Operations and/or People Director on employee relations matters, including disciplinaries, grievances, performance issues, investigations and TUPE.
  • Partner with operations managers and other key stakeholders to provide clear, pragmatic guidance, building their capability to handle ER issues confidently and consistently.
  • Ensure all ER practices align with UK employment law and company values.

People Operations & HR Systems

  • Manage day-to-day running of the HR function, including the day-to-day management of the HR Coordinator.
  • Oversee and manage core HR operations for the full employee life-cycle; including onboarding, HR inbox management, maintaining accurate employee records and off-boarding.
  • Continuously improve HR systems, processes, and workflows to enhance efficiency and the overall employee experience.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant handling of employee data in line with GDPR and UK legislation.

Policies & Best Practice

  • Work with People Director and the General Counsel to develop, implement and maintain company policies to ensure compliance with employment laws and organisational standards.
  • Communicate policy changes effectively across the organisation and provide guidance to managers and employees.
  • Conduct periodic policy audits to ensure consistency, fairness, and alignment with best practices.

Performance, Learning & Development

  • Coordinate the annual performance management cycle.
  • Identify training needs and deliver workshops and development initiatives to support continuous learning across the business.
  • Work with L&D to ensure training is relevant and up to date, enabling managers to manage and support employees.

People Strategy & Insights

  • Work with managers to implement agreed people initiatives.
  • Maintain and report on HR metrics.
  • Support the People Director with the delivery of people initiatives.

Requirements:

  • CIPD Qualified, preferred but not essential.
  • Proven HR generalist experience in a fast-paced, multi-site environment (retail or hospitality desirable).
  • Strong working knowledge of UK employment law and leading ER cases end-to-end.
  • Experience coaching, influencing and building capability in managers.
  • Comfortable supporting people projects.
  • Experience with HR systems and confident using data to drive decisions.
  • A people-first mindset with a passion for culture, engagement and development.
