The British Academy, the UK’s national body for the humanities and social sciences, is seeking an experienced and motivated HR Manager (Employee Resourcing) to join our friendly and professional HR team.

Reporting to the Head of Human Resources, this is a key role within a small HR function that supports approximately 180 employees across the Academy. You will take lead responsibility for employee resourcing services, ensuring the effective delivery of recruitment, onboarding, payroll, pensions, benefits, and HR systems administration, while contributing to the development and implementation of the Academy’s People Strategy.

  • Manage and develop a small team comprising an HR Officer and HR Assistant, fostering a high-performing and customer-focused service.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on recruitment, reward, benefits, visa sponsorship, and related HR policies and procedures.
  • Lead on the continued development of the Academy’s HR management information system, including the implementation of new functionality and employee self-service tools.
  • Support annual pay processes, working with external payroll and pension providers and providing analytical and administrative support for pay negotiations and the Remuneration Committee.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
