Health and Safety Advisor Energy from Waste
Gladsmuir, East Lothian | Permanent | Full-time | Site-based
Are you an experienced Health and Safety Advisor, HSE Advisor, SHE Advisor or EHS Advisor with a background in energy from waste, biomass, power generation, utilities or heavy industrial operations?
RecruitME is recruiting for a Health and Safety Advisor to join an established energy business at its operational facility in Gladsmuir, East Lothian.
This is a hands-on, highly visible site-based opportunity within easy reach of Tranent, Musselburgh, Haddington and the eastern side of Edinburgh.
You will work closely with the Operations Director, Plant Management Team and Group Head of Health and Safety, taking ownership of day-to-day safety activity across the facility.
The role will see you promote behavioural safety, support ISO 45001, lead incident investigations and help embed a proactive culture of continuous improvement among employees and contractors.

The Health and Safety Advisor role
Working as part of the site management team, you will:
- Act as the principal site contact for health and safety advice and compliance
- Support the Operations Director with legislative, Group and site safety requirements
- Promote a proactive and continuously improving safety culture
- Develop, implement and review health and safety policies and procedures
- Support the implementation and ongoing management of ISO 45001
- Lead internal audits, inspections and workplace assessments
- Monitor site safety performance and identify areas for improvement
- Produce regular reports for the Plant Manager, Operations Director and Group Health and Safety team
- Chair the site Health and Safety Committee
- Represent the facility at Group health and safety forums
- Lead incident and near-miss investigations
- Complete root-cause analysis and communicate lessons learned
- Monitor corrective and preventative actions through to completion
- Review contractor competence and safety documentation
- Monitor compliance with RAMS, permits and site procedures
- Deliver and oversee site health and safety inductions
- Support incident-management and emergency-response arrangements
- Liaise with contractors, clients and relevant external or regulatory bodies
- Participate in daily operational and outage-planning meetings

Planned outages
During planned plant outages, you will play an important role within the outage-management team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing and gaining approval for the outage health and safety plan
- Supporting CDM arrangements and compliance
- Auditing permits, risk assessments and method statements
- Conducting site inspections, investigations and safety surveillance
- Attending outage meetings and advising operational teams
- Agreeing arrangements for out-of-hours health and safety support
- Producing detailed health and safety summaries for outage reports
What we are looking for
To be considered for this opportunity, you should have:
- A minimum NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
- Previous health and safety experience in energy from waste, biomass, electricity generation, power generation, utilities or a comparable heavy industrial environment
- Strong working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and recognised best practice
- Knowledge of relevant ISO management standards, ideally including ISO 45001
- Experience completing workplace audits, inspections and risk assessments
- Practical incident-investigation and root-cause-analysis experience
- Experience monitoring contractors, RAMS, permits and safe systems of work
- The confidence to challenge unsafe behaviour and influence employees, managers and contractors
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good IT skills and the ability to produce clear and accurate reports
- Membership of an appropriate professional health and safety body
- Flexibility to travel occasionally to other Group sites

An auditor qualification, formal incident-investigation training or experience operating as a senior or lead investigator would be advantageous.
Essential industrial experience
This position requires practical health and safety experience gained within a live operational environment such as:
- Energy from Waste
- Biomass
- Power or electricity generation
- Utilities
- Process manufacturing
- Chemical or petrochemical operations
- Heavy engineering
- Other regulated or high-hazard industrial facilities
Applicants whose experience has been gained solely within office, retail, warehousing or residential construction environments are unlikely to have the operational exposure required.
