Purpose of the Role
We are looking for a proactive and collaborative HS&E Advisor to join our Environment Business.
Reporting to the Framework HS&E Manager, you will support the delivery of Galliford Try's Health, Safety and Environmental strategy across a range of projects and frameworks. Working closely with operational teams, clients and supply chain partners, you will help ensure our projects are delivered to exemplary health, safety and environmental standards.
This role plays a key part in driving continuous improvement, supporting compliance with management systems, fostering a positive HS&E culture and ensuring consistency of performance across the business.
What You'll Be Doing
As an HS&E Advisor, you will:
- Support the development of a positive, open and collaborative HS&E culture across the business.
- Promote Galliford Try's behavioural programme, Challenging Beliefs, Affecting Behaviours, helping to embed positive safety behaviours throughout our projects.
- Support the implementation of our HS&E Strategy, driving continual improvement and learning across the business.
- Implement and support compliance with our HS&E Management System, ensuring alignment with company and client requirements.
- Provide technical health, safety and environmental guidance to operational and site management teams.
- Engage with clients, supply chain partners, regulatory authorities, industry bodies and colleagues throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support operational teams from planning through to project completion, ensuring proactive implementation of HS&E standards.
- Monitor and review HS&E performance using KPIs and support the delivery of improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to the identification and mitigation of HS&E risks across projects and operations.
- Attend project meetings and provide professional advice and support to delivery teams.
- Escalate HS&E concerns appropriately and support the implementation of corrective actions.
- Collaborate proactively with operational and support teams on all matters relating to health, safety and environmental performance.
Key Responsibilities
Assurance, Auditing & Compliance
- Conduct workplace inspections, HS&E reviews and site audits.
- Undertake ISO 14001 audits to verify compliance with company management systems.
- Record findings accurately within company systems and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Review project documentation including:
- Construction Phase Plans
- Emergency Response Plans
- High-risk Method Statements
- Risk Assessments
- HS&E-related project documentation
- Assist with the onboarding and performance review of supply chain partners where required.

Incident Management & Reporting
- Investigate incidents, non-conformances and environmental events.
- Produce detailed reports and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Support or lead incident investigations, identifying root causes and preventative actions.
- Manage incident reporting and close-out activities through Galliford Try systems.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies when required.
- Produce monthly performance reports and present findings to leadership teams as appropriate.
Training & Development
- Deliver HS&E training sessions, awareness programmes and toolbox talks.
- Prepare and develop guidance notes, codes of practice and best practice materials.
- Support operational teams, leadership teams and supply chain partners in improving HS&E performance and understanding.
- Contribute to the development of a strong learning culture across the business.
About You
We're looking for an enthusiastic HS&E professional with strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset and a passion for creating safe, sustainable and high-performing workplaces.
Essential Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental responsibilities and management systems.
- Able to demonstrate Galliford Try's values of Excellence, Passion, Integrity and Collaboration (EPIC).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building capabilities.
- Ability to influence and support teams at all levels.
- Analytical and systematic approach to problem solving and risk management.
- Ability to thrive in a complex and fast-moving environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Knowledge of performance monitoring, reporting systems and data analysis.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Relevant HS&E experience within construction, infrastructure, utilities, water or a similar industry.
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate or NEBOSH General Certificate, or currently working towards achieving one.
- Proven knowledge of HS&E legislation, management systems and risk management processes.
- Experience supporting projects through planning, design and construction phases.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across projects and sites as required.
Desirable Qualifications
- Membership of IOSH or IIRSM (TechIOSH minimum).
- CMIOSH status or currently working towards Chartered membership.
- NVQ Level 3, Diploma or higher qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Previous experience within the water, utilities or infrastructure sectors.
