ROLE PURPOSE

The HSEQ Advisor will support Martin & Hamilton, the HSEQ Manager, and project teams in implementing and improving the company’s Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Management Systems. With a strong safety focus, the role combines regular project-site attendance and inspections with office-based advice, reporting, and document support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the HSEQ Manager in delivering HSEQ policies, objectives, and improvement plans.
  • Provide practical advice to directors, managers, site teams, and employees, promoting a positive safety culture through visible engagement and constructive challenge.
  • Help projects meet company, client, and legal requirements and monitor corrective and preventative actions through Procore to timely close-out.

HEALTH & SAFETY

  • Develop, review, and support implementation of construction-phase plans, risk assessments, method statements, COSHH assessments, lifting plans, permits, and safe systems of work.
  • Complete planned and reactive site inspections, audits, and assign actions and monitor close-out.
  • Review subcontractor HSEQ documentation and support inductions, iHasco training, toolbox talks, briefings, and campaigns.
  • Assist with accident, near-miss, and environmental-event investigations, root-cause analysis, Procore reporting, and action tracking.
  • Monitor controls for high-risk activities, including work at height, lifting, temporary works, excavation, mobile plant, occupational health, and public protection.
  • Support compliance with CDM duties and stop or escalate work involving serious or imminent risk.

QUALITY & ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

  • Support application of project quality and environmental procedures, inspections, and controls.
  • Assist with non-conformance reporting, corrective actions, lessons learned, and continual improvement.
  • Monitor waste, pollution prevention, resource use, nuisance, spill response, and other legal or client controls.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction qualification.
  • At least two years’ relevant HSEQ experience with essential practical construction-site experience.
  • Working towards the NEBOSH Diploma, Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of UK/NI construction health and safety requirements and practical experience of inspections, risk assessments, method statements, investigations, and action close-out.
  • Full valid driving licence and ability to travel regularly to company projects.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • IOSH or other relevant professional membership.
  • Internal auditor training or ISO 45001, ISO 14001, or ISO 9001 audit experience.
  • Relevant environmental, quality, fire, temporary works, training, or other qualifications.
  • Experience supporting third-party audits such as Safe-Contractor, Considerate Constructors, or similar schemes.

SKILLS & BEHAVIOURS

  • Confident communicator able to build relationships, provide practical advice, and challenge non-compliance positively.
  • Organised, accurate, and able to balance site priorities, management-system activities, and clear reporting.
  • Competent in Microsoft 365 and confident using online systems such as Procore for inspections, observations, forms, document control, reporting, and actions; previous Procore experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Committed to teamwork, integrity, professional development, and continuous improvement.

WORKING ARRANGEMENTS & EXPECTATIONS

The role requires regular attendance across live construction projects together with office-based management-system support, reporting, and document preparation. Travel, flexibility, and occasional work outside normal hours may be required.
