Human Factors Engineering Engineer II – SMR-300 Project
Location(s): Camden, NJ; Covert, MI; or Almonsbury, UK
About the Role
Holtec International and its subsidiaries are designing the SMR-300, a next-generation small modular reactor (SMR) powered by nuclear fission—a clean, safe, and secure energy solution. As part of Holtec’s growth as a global turnkey supplier for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil fuel energy, we are seeking a Human Factors Engineering Engineer II to lead Human Factors Engineering (HFE) activities for the first-of-its-kind reactor.
The SMR-300 represents an exciting opportunity to collaborate with innovative engineers advancing light water reactor technology for global deployment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Human Factors Engineering (HFE) strategies to support SMR-300 plant design, development, and licensing
- Derive, manage, and maintain HFE requirements compliant with nuclear regulatory guidance and industry standards
- Conduct task analysis and human error analysis to support:
- Safety and licensing activities
- Staffing strategies
- Important Human Actions (IHAs) identification and evaluation
- Human-system integration
- Support design and review of Human-System Interfaces (HSIs), including:
- Control rooms
- Digital systems
- Local control stations and panels
- Participate in multidisciplinary design and maintenance reviews to ensure HFE requirements are integrated across systems
- Plan and execute Human Factors Verification and Validation (V&V), including Integrated System Validation (ISV)
- Author HFE assessments and licensing documentation demonstrating regulatory compliance
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams and regulatory stakeholders to present technical findings
- Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and review engineering deliverables

Requirements
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, or related engineering/psychology/human-centered design discipline (ABET-accredited preferred)
- 5-7 years of Human Factors Engineering experience in nuclear or safety-critical industries (e.g., aerospace, defense)
Technical Skills:
- Experience in task analysis, human error analysis, reliability assessments, and HSI evaluations
- Proficiency with nuclear Human Factors regulatory guidance and industry standards
- Ability to support safety analysis, Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA), and Important Human Actions (IHAs)
- Capability to develop technical HFE reports, assessments, and licensing documentation independently
Soft Skills:
- Strong communication for multidisciplinary teams, clients, and regulators
- Judgment to balance technical rigor, project scope, and regulatory expectations
- Ability to lead analyses with limited oversight
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or improving HFE methodologies
Compliance:
- Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810

Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics, or related field
- Direct experience in nuclear HFE program alignment with NRC guidance (e.g., NUREG-0700, NUREG-0711)
- Experience in:
- Control room design
- Digital HSI development
- Plant layout or maintainability evaluations
- Verification & Validation (V&V) and ISV participation
- Hands-on involvement in:
- Licensing activities
- Regulatory interactions or responses
- Familiarity with nuclear standards (NRC, IEEE, ISO, EPRI, IAEA)

- Base salary: $100,000–$120,000 (based on experience)
