Thistle Seafoods HR Advisor

Thistle Seafoods is one of the largest family-owned manufacturers of quality seafood products in Europe. We supply outstanding products at every price point to leading retail and food service customers within the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, and Australia. Our Head Office is based in Peterhead in the North-East of Scotland, and our second site is based in Uddingston in the outskirts of Glasgow.

The Role

The HR Advisor is responsible for the effective day-to-day delivery of HR within their allocated area, providing professional and practical advice to managers and employees and ensuring Company policies, procedures, and employment practices are applied fairly and consistently. Working collaboratively across the HR function, the post holder will support Company-wide HR priorities and take a proactive approach to employment legislation, regulatory, ethical, and customer requirements, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to maintain compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional and practical HR advice and guidance to managers and employees across all areas of HR.
  • Manage and advise on employee relations matters including disciplinary, grievance, absence, capability, and performance, escalating complex or higher-risk matters where appropriate.
  • Develop, review, and implement HR policies, procedures, and employment documentation, ensuring they remain legally compliant and appropriate for the business.
  • Proactively monitor employment legislation, regulatory requirements, and HR best practice, identifying forthcoming changes and ensuring appropriate actions are implemented.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of relevant customer Codes of Practice, Sedex, EcoVadis, and other employment-related requirements, working with the Chief Operating Officer and CSR to support ongoing compliance and ensure relevant information is kept up to date.
  • Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, support and coordinate the HR requirements for ethical audits, including preparation, participation, and follow-up of any corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the requirements relating to labor providers, ensuring ongoing compliance with applicable legislation, Company, and customer requirements, with guidance from the Chief Operating Officer where required.
  • Develop and maintain a good understanding of Skilled Worker visa and sponsor license requirements, managing the sponsorship application process and ongoing administration of sponsored employees and ensuring relevant monitoring, record-keeping, and reporting requirements are met.
  • Ensure applicable HR-related statutory and government reporting requirements are completed accurately and within required timescales.
  • Support employee engagement, performance management, wellbeing, and retention initiatives.
  • Oversee HR administration, systems, and employee records, ensuring information and documentation are accurate, compliant, and appropriately maintained.
  • Build positive and credible relationships with managers and employees, maintaining a visible and professional HR presence.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Strong generalist HR knowledge and experience, ideally within manufacturing, food manufacturing, or a similarly fast-paced environment.
  • Good working knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice.
  • Experience managing employee relations matters including disciplinary, grievance, absence, capability, and performance.
  • Experience developing and applying HR policies, procedures, and employment documentation.
  • Experience of HR systems, employee records, and workforce reporting.
  • Good understanding of data protection and confidentiality requirements relating to employee information.
  • Knowledge of Skilled Worker visa and sponsor license requirements, or experience supporting employee sponsorship processes, would be advantageous.
  • Awareness of ethical employment, customer requirements, and labor provider compliance would be advantageous.

Skills / Personal Attributes

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build credible working relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to provide practical HR advice and appropriately challenge managers where required.
  • Proactive approach with the ability to identify emerging HR risks, legislative changes, and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail with strong written communication skills.
  • Professional, approachable, and discreet, maintaining confidentiality at all times.

Education / Qualifications

  • CIPD qualification, working towards a CIPD qualification, or equivalent relevant HR knowledge and experience is desirable.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and maintaining current knowledge of employment law and HR practice.

Hours of Work

  • Full-time contractual hours are 40 hours per week, with normal working hours anticipated to be 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday.
