'HR with a difference'
HR Dept Exeter provides practical, commercially focused HR and employment law support to small and medium-sized organisations across Greater Exeter and the surrounding area.
As part of the wider HR Dept network, we combine the personal service and trusted relationships of a local team with access to a nationwide community of HR professionals, shared expertise and specialist support.
Our clients span a broad mix of sectors. The work is varied, fast-moving and closely connected to the businesses that drive the local economy. We are not a remote call centre or a one-size-fits-all provider. We take time to understand each client, building long-term partnerships and delivering clear, pragmatic advice that reflects their people, culture and commercial priorities.
This is an opportunity to make a visible difference across a diverse client portfolio. You will be trusted to manage meaningful work, develop strong client relationships and help business owners and managers navigate both everyday matters and complex workplace challenges. No two days are the same, making this an excellent opportunity for an HR professional who enjoys variety, responsibility and seeing the practical impact of their advice.
Purpose of the role
The HR Consultant is the first point of contact for HR Dept clients. You will be responsible for providing high quality, pragmatic and commercial HR advice and support to clients and navigating through HR processes to provide solutions to people problems. You will also be responsible for undertaking client project work as required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
