The HR Lead is the School’s senior professional adviser on employment matters. The postholder will provide authoritative, practical and proportionate advice to the Principal, senior leaders and line managers, ensuring that decisions are legally sound, procedurally fair and aligned with the School’s values and operational needs. The role has particular responsibility for complex employee relations, formal procedures, organisational change, employment contracts and policy.

Working closely with the HR and Office Support Assistant, the HR Lead will set standards for accurate, confidential and responsive HR practice while retaining ownership of higher-risk casework and decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the principal source of professional HR and employment-law advice to the Principal and senior leaders, identifying legal, procedural, financial, safeguarding and reputational risks.
  • Lead or advise on formal employee-relations processes, including disciplinary, grievance, capability, performance, attendance and sickness-absence matters, ensuring fair investigation, appropriate documentation and compliance with the ACAS Code and relevant legislation.
  • Manage complex and sensitive cases from initial assessment through to outcome and appeal, preparing letters, scripts, risk assessments, settlement options and records as required.
  • Advise on the lawful termination of employment contracts, including dismissals, notice, payments, references, settlement agreements and liaison with external legal advisers where appropriate.
  • Design and lead redundancy and restructuring processes, including business cases, selection pools and criteria, individual and collective consultation, suitable alternative employment, notice and implementation.
  • Draft, review and advise on employment contracts, consultancy arrangements, offer documentation and contractual terms, ensuring consistency, clarity and legal compliance.
  • Lead contractual variation processes, including consultation on changes to duties, hours, salary, benefits, working patterns or other terms and conditions, and ensure changes are properly agreed and recorded.
