A Snapshot of Your Day
Join us as a CAD Technician within the Project Management team of Siemens Energy’s UK & Ireland Grid Technologies division. In this critical role, you will support the delivery of high-voltage substation projects by providing specialized technical design and drafting services. Imagine focusing on HV Cable System Design & Drafting, Project Design Collaboration, and Technical Documentation & Standards Compliance to create accurate, standards-compliant technical drawings. You will play a vital role in integrating your work with the wider project engineering and management functions, ensuring that all technical aspects are meticulously handled.
How You’ll Make a Difference
- HV Cable System Design & Drafting: Create, modify, and manage detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings for high-voltage cable systems, including routes, layouts, and cross-sections based on engineering inputs.
- Develop and update electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and termination drawings for substation projects. Ensure all drawings and designs comply with project specifications, client requirements, and relevant industry standards (e.g., BS, ENA). Incorporate red-line markups from engineering and site teams to produce accurate as-built documentation.
- Project Design Collaboration: Collaborate closely with project managers and engineers to interpret design requirements, resolve technical queries, and ensure drawing accuracy. Participate in design review meetings to provide expert input on drawing feasibility, constructability, and potential clashes.
- Prepare and compile comprehensive drawing packages for various project stages, including tender, construction, and final handover.
- Technical Documentation & Quality Control: Maintain and manage the project drawing register and control the flow of CAD documentation within the common data environment (CDE). Perform rigorous quality assurance checks on drawings to verify accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established drafting standards.
- Assist in the preparation of Bills of Materials (BOMs) and material take-offs derived from technical drawings.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
