I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The job
You'll carry out testing and commissioning of HV electrical infrastructure from 11kV through to 132kV.
Projects include major grid connections, substations and complex power infrastructure, with much of the current workload supporting renewable energy and data centre developments.
You'll be involved in:
- Primary and secondary testing
- Protection relay testing and configuration
- Secondary injection testing
- Transformers and switchgear
- CTs and VTs
- SCADA and control systems
- G99/G59 testing
- Fault finding and diagnostics
- Commissioning documentation and reports
- Energisation and handover
About you
We're looking for an experienced HV commissioning professional rather than somebody whose experience is predominantly installation or maintenance.
You'll ideally have:
- Strong hands-on HV commissioning experience
- Experience across 11kV, 33kV and ideally higher voltages
- Protection and secondary injection experience
- Experience with equipment such as Omicron and/or Megger
- DNO, ICP, IDNO or private HV network experience
- Ability to read schematics, SLDs and protection drawings
- SAP status or good experience working under an SAP

Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
You don't necessarily need to have commissioned at 132kV already if you've got strong HV commissioning experience and the capability to progress.
You can live anywhere in the UK.
What you must be comfortable with is travelling nationwide and regularly staying away Monday to Friday.
For somebody who enjoys site work, wants technically interesting HV projects and is happy travelling, the combination of basic salary, overtime, paid travel and stay-away payments makes this a seriously strong permanent package.
