Salary – £66,370.00
Location – Tufnell Park HV Power Depot
Contract Type – Permanent - London Underground.
Overview Of Project/role
This role is responsible for undertaking maintenance, servicing, breakdown and fault repair of all Substation plant and equipment across the whole of London Underground's HV Power Distribution Network.
To ensure that the assets are maintained in accordance with set specifications to meet safety and operational criteria in order to provide an efficient and continuous power supplies to the London Underground railway system.
The HV Power Plant Fitter role is an equal split of electrical and mechanical disciplines.
Key Accountabilities
- Maintain, service, repair, disassemble & re-build and re-calibrate all substation plant, including High Voltage, Low Voltage and DC switchgear, Signalling systems, Frequency Changers, batteries & chargers, Rectifiers, Transformers, rotating plant, Power Quality equipment including SVCs and Harmonic filters, Off Line Battery Inverters (OLBI) and all other substation equipment.
- Diagnose and eliminate electrical and mechanical faults on all substation plant, wiring and control.
- Use and apply the content of technical documents, manuals, diagrams, drawings to plant and systems.
- To act as Site Person in Charge (SPIC) as required for both HV Power and 3rd party works.
- To declare substation plant fit/ unfit for service. Follow the instructions of others when switching plant equipment on or off.
- Undertake advanced condition monitoring techniques, thermal imaging, trip profiling, DC DAOL testing, Ductoring, IR testing etc.
- Undertake lifting, slinging and rigging lifting operation of heavy plant & equipment.
- To prepare and submit reports on faults and plant breakdowns attended.
- The job holder is required to drive company vehicles, clean them and carry out vehicle checks as required.

Skills
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Fitters are required to demonstrate both mechanical skills as well as a sound knowledge of batteries and chargers, standby power supplies, three phase ac electrical supplies, transformer principles, AC & DC switchgear operation and the fundamentals of circuit protection and earthing arrangements.
During the probationary period there will be a Low Voltage Assessment.
The assessment will be by written exam in the classroom and on site (practical safety critical assessment). The job holder will be required to renew their license every three years by means of reassessment, this process will in turn be supported by HV Power's competency and capability policies.
Knowledge
- Completed an indentured or modern apprenticeship in Power, Electrical or Mechanical roles.
- Have an Electrical, Mechanical or Power Engineering technical qualification or equivalent.
- Be proficient in the use of electrical test equipment used to determine the condition of plant & equipment.
- Have relevant electrical or mechanical experience (fitting skills).
- The ability to understand technical drawings.
- Have a full clean driving licence.
- Sound electrical knowledge of DC battery supplies, three phase AC electrical supplies, transformer principles, the fundamentals of circuit protection and earthing arrangements is desired.
Experience
Position holders must have completed an indentured or modern apprenticeship in Power, Electrical or Mechanical role. Time served in a Power, Electrical or Mechanical environment would be a requirement.
