Job Opportunity: HVAC Engineer
Contract & Details
- Contract Type: Full Time, Permanent
- Location: RAF Fairford (with travel to RAF Welford as required)
- Working Hours: 40 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm). On-call rota between 4:30pm to 8:00am, including weekends.
- Salary: £40,000 – £43,000 + on-call allowance + overtime
About the Role
Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, you will maintain, repair, and improve HVAC systems across RAF Fairford and RAF Welford, primarily based at Fairford with travel to Welford as necessary.
As an HVAC Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Working with a skilled engineering team, managing tasks through a tablet-based system and scheduling maintenance/repairs to ensure safety, efficiency, and high standards.
- Conducting planned preventative maintenance, statutory inspections, and compliance activities.
- Diagnosing faults and performing reactive repairs on air conditioning, ventilation, and extraction systems to ensure mission-critical assets remain operational.
- Completing minor installation and refurbishment works, interpreting technical drawings and specifications, and identifying cost-effective repair solutions with minimal supervision.
- Maintaining accurate records using PDA and tablet-based systems, with on-time submission of maintenance documentation.
- Ensuring all health and safety documentation (e.g., RAMS) is complete and up-to-date before commencing work.
- Proactively reporting equipment defects, compliance concerns, or other health and safety risks.
- Building strong relationships with military personnel, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) representatives, and supply chain partners to deliver exceptional customer service.
- Supporting and mentoring apprentices, sharing technical knowledge, and contributing to the development of the engineering team.

Requirements
- A qualified HVAC professional with:
- A City & Guilds qualification in Air Conditioning or an equivalent industry-recognised certification.
- F-Gas Category 1 and Safe Handling of Refrigerants qualifications.
- Strong experience in HVAC maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repairs.
- A comprehensive knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, including COSHH and RIDDOR requirements.
- Essential: A full UK driving licence, the ability to obtain Security Clearance, reliability, and the ability to work independently with high standards of workmanship.
- Strong communication skills, problem-solving ability, and independence are key.
- Advantages:
- Previous experience in commercial environments.
- Knowledge of JSP 375 requirements.
- Experience with the MOD (Ministry of Defence).
- Additional Health & Safety or First Aid qualifications.
- Membership of a relevant professional body.
- Previous Security Clearance or hydrocarbon update certification.

On-Call & Earnings
- Out-of-hours call-out rota covering 4:30pm to 8:00am (including weekends).
- Engineers must respond to emergency call-outs within one hour when on duty.
- On-call allowance: £150 per week.
- Any call-out attended earns a minimum payment for four hours, regardless of actual time spent.
- Overtime policy:
- Monday to Saturday work: time and a half pay.
- Sunday work: double time pay.
