Senior / Principal Hydraulic Modeller

Office Locations: Christchurch (Dorset), London, Woking (Surrey), Aldershot (Hampshire)

About the role

Mayer Brown Ltd is seeking an experienced Senior or Principal Hydraulic Modeller to support the growth of our hydraulic modelling and hydrology services.

Our work focuses on fluvial and surface water hydraulic modelling, helping clients understand flood risk, inform development proposals and design effective mitigation. This is an opportunity to take a leading technical role, deliver a varied portfolio of projects and help shape our expanding modelling capability.

We welcome applications from experienced Senior/Principal Modellers who are excited by the prospect of helping to mould and shape our Hydraulic Modelling services and support our Hydraulic Modelling Lead in developing this side of the business.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, review and deliver hydraulic models for fluvial and surface water flood risk assessments.
  • Build and apply 1D, 2D and linked 1D–2D models, principally using TUFLOW and associated modelling software.
  • Define modelling approaches, data requirements and survey specifications appropriate to each project.
  • Represent watercourses, floodplains, drainage features, culverts, bridges and other hydraulic structures.
  • Assess existing and proposed flood risk, including climate change, blockage, sensitivity testing and mitigation options.
  • Diagnose model instability and mass balance issues, undertake quality assurance and maintain clear modelling records.
  • Interpret modelling results and communicate their implications through clear reports, mapping and advice.
  • Work with hydrology colleagues to develop suitable inflows and boundary conditions.
  • Liaise with clients, the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities and other stakeholders, including responding to technical review comments.
  • Manage project programmes, budgets and deliverables, coordinating with the wider project team.
  • Support and mentor junior colleagues and contribute to technical standards and modelling procedures.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
