Job Description
Are you passionate about using the latest hydrological science to deliver outcomes across the flood-sector?
We're looking for a hydrologist to join one of our Evidence Services operational teams. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the delivery of critical operational services, helping ensure the effective, practical application of hydrology.
You'll support the team to undertake and review hydrological flood-risk modelling across the land-use planning and FCRM capital investment programmes. Working closely with colleagues across Evidence Services, you'll help keep our wider flood-risk modelling work moving, providing cornerstone hydrological expertise that underpin the modelling chain.
Working alongside technical specialists, you will undertake hydrological analysis, contribute to national improvement projects and provide evidence that supports better decisions during both business-as-usual and flood incidents.

The Team
The role sits within Evidence Services, part of Digital Data and Evidence.
Evidence Services provides expert evidence, analysis and technical services that help the Environment Agency make informed decisions for people, places and the environment.

Experience/Skills Required
We are seeking someone with:
- A degree or equivalent experience in hydrology, geography, environmental science, engineering or similar
- An understanding of hydrological processes and flood estimation principles
- Experience analysing environmental datasets
- An ability to communicate technical findings clearly and with a clear focus on outcomes
- An ability to work independently and collaboratively within a dispersed team

- Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH) methods
- WINFAP, ReFH2 or similar tools
- Python, R or an equivalent programming language
- GIS experience
- Hydrometric data analysis
- Flood forecasting or hydraulic flood-risk modelling

Competence 1: Data and Information Management

As a hydrologist you will call upon an array of datasets and methods to draw conclusions.

Description
In your work you will need to balance the desire to have a complete picture against the operational reality of meeting deadlines.
Describe a situation where you were asked to solve a technical problem with incomplete information. How did you make a decision without all the facts?
Competence 3: Works in Teams
Description
Hydrology is the technical starting point for flood-risk modelling, but it is only one component of a much bigger and longer chain.
Describe a time when you worked with people from different teams, disciplines or backgrounds to achieve a collective outcome. What was your role and what did you do to ensure the overarching piece of work was a success?
Competence 4: Focuses on Customers and Partners
Description
Sitting in an operational delivery team, an important part of your role will be meeting the needs of our customers.
Describe a time when you delivered a service to a customer. What did you do to identify their needs, were there any difficult conversations to manage and how did you know they were satisfied with the service provided?
Additional Information
If you are applying from the Civil Service please note that the Environment Agency is not a part of HM Civil Service and you would not be a Crown Servant in the event of being appointed. Therefore, you will not be eligible for continuous service.
