About us
The Science Museum Group is the world's leading group of science museums. It brings together the Science Museum in London, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, the National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion in Shildon and the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford. Our Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton is home to much of our world-class collection. Every year, millions of visitors come through our doors to explore stories of science, technology, engineering and innovation. Our mission is to inspire futures, and we care for our collection so that people everywhere can enjoy it for generations to come.
Our ICT team supports all of this behind the scenes. We look after the systems and infrastructure that keep our museums, collections, staff and visitors connected and secure.
About the role
Based at the Science & Media Museum in Bradford, you will be our on-site ICT engineer, providing hands-on technical support to colleagues across the museum. Most of your time will be spent on operational work, from Service Desk support and physically investigating issues on site to desktop and infrastructure (server, network, virtualisation) support. You will also provide technical support to ICT projects at the museum, working with project managers and installing contractors to make sure the right technical provisions are in place. Maintaining and improving customer satisfaction is key.
When not supporting customer and infrastructure operations, projects and tasks will be assigned and scheduled by the Service Delivery Manager who will coordinate priorities and requirements.
As our only full-time engineer in Bradford, you will often be working on your own, away from the wider ICT team. You will need to be confident managing your own workload, researching and solving problems independently, and knowing when to draw on colleagues elsewhere in the Group.
Whilst having your own expertise, you will have great opportunities to gain and share experience and knowledge over a wide spectrum of systems that the ICT team support. You will have every opportunity to use this exposure, and the diversity it brings, to develop your career in IT, developing skills through both informal and formal training and through on-the-job learning.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

This is a full-time, fixed-term role until 31 March 2028, working 35 hours a week, with a salary of £45,318 plus benefits. It's based at the Science & Media Museum in Bradford, and you'll typically spend 4 days a week on site and 1 day working from home. There may be times when you're needed on site all 5 days. You'll be part of our on-call rota for a week at a time every now and then. Any other out-of-hours work will be arranged in advance and paid as overtime or taken as time off in lieu.
About you
We're keen to see applications from candidates who are already working confidently in a hands-on IT support or engineering role and can hit the ground running. You'll have solid technical knowledge across Windows 11, Microsoft 365 (including Entra ID, Intune and Teams) and Active Directory, along with an understanding of networking. You'll also have supported at least one other part of a wider technology estate, such as servers, virtual platforms, backup, or cloud services in Azure or AWS. Knowledge of ITIL, PowerShell scripting, Juniper networking, hypervisor environments or Fortinet firewalls would be a bonus, but isn't essential.
We're equally keen to hear from candidates who are happy working independently. As our only full-time engineer in Bradford, you'll be the person colleagues turn to on site, so you'll need to manage your own workload, work problems out for yourself and know when to bring in the wider ICT team. You'll be friendly, clear and calm under pressure, whether you're fixing an issue at the front desk or keeping colleagues updated on something bigger. You'll also bring the technical know-how to support project work at the museum, such as making sure contractors have what they need when new equipment goes in.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
