About the Role
HMP Oakwood is an innovative prison recognized by HM Inspectorate of Prisons as an “Impressive institution, with a culture of decency and respect. Driven by courageous leadership, excellent peer-led initiatives and outstanding management of learning and skills provisions”.
Within Care and Rehabilitation Services, the philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalize prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe and causes of prison stress are minimized. Central to our philosophy is the relationship between staff and prisoners. Our training and operational practices emphasize the need to treat prisoners with dignity and respect and G4S staff build positive and supportive relationships with the prisoners in their care. HMP Oakwood is one of the largest prisons in England and Wales, providing places for up to approximately 2100 Category C male prisoners.
HMP Oakwood is looking to employ an Imam to work with a multi-faith chaplaincy team, providing pastoral and spiritual support to both prisoner and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- To lead Friday Prayers and Islamic classes for both mains and vulnerable prisoners.
- To update and enhance the Islamic studies Syllabus to meet the needs of the community when needed.
- To help promote the Islamic faith within the establishment, working closely with other members of the Chaplaincy team, the Equalities team and operational staff to ensure that the spiritual and pastoral needs of the Muslim prisoners are met.
- To carry out some generic duties within the establishment, in particular visiting prisoners in the Care and Separation Unit and Drug rehabilitation unit.
- To be a positive role model throughout the establishment.
- To support prisoners when necessary with issues that are raised or signpost the prisoner to the relevant area of expertise.
- Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture across the site leading by example, this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner and follow the applicable safe systems of work for the role.
- You are required to comply with the UK General Data Protection Regulations (UK GDPR) and Data Protection Act 2018, and the organisation's Data Protection Policies and must ensure that personal data relating to service users, colleagues and others is collected, stored, processed and disposed of in accordance with these requirements.
- You must only access personal information necessary for your role, maintain confidentiality at all times and immediately report any data breaches or suspected breaches in line with G4S procedures.

Essential Skills
- In-depth knowledge of Islam, preferably holding a recognised qualification in Islamic studies at degree level or equivalent.
- Excellent Imam skills.
- Substantial experience of organising and leading Islamic worship and teaching.
- Confident in delivering the Friday Sermon.
Desirable Skills
- Experience of working in a prison environment is desirable but not essential as training will be given.
