Group Financial Controller | Fast-Growth Marketing Agency | London | Hybrid

We’re working exclusively with a fast-growing marketing agency that has built an impressive position in its market and is entering an exciting next phase of growth.

As the Group continues to expand, they’re looking for a Group Financial Controller to take ownership of the finance operation and become a key partner to the senior leadership team. This is a broad, hands-on role for a qualified accountant who enjoys working in an entrepreneurial environment. You’ll lead a small central finance team, strengthen the infrastructure behind the numbers and bring greater visibility around performance, profitability and cash as the Group continues to scale.

You’ll work closely with the CEO and leadership team, giving them the financial insight they need to make better commercial decisions while ensuring the underlying finance operation remains accurate, controlled and well organised.

The Opportunity

This is much more than a reporting role. You’ll have genuine ownership of the Group's finance function, with the freedom to improve how things are done, introduce better systems and automation, and develop a finance team that can support the business through its next stage of growth.

The role will cover both the financial control side of the business and the commercial finance agenda, including management information, budgeting, forecasting, profitability analysis and working capital.

There will also be exposure to wider strategic projects, including potential acquisitions and the integration of new businesses into the Group.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Take overall responsibility for the smooth running of the Group finance function and ensure the team operates with clear processes, priorities and accountability.
  • Lead and develop a small finance team, providing direction, coaching and support while creating an environment where people can continue to grow.
  • Own the month-end process and ensure the leadership team receives clear, commercially useful reporting on performance.
  • Produce and develop management information covering revenue, margins, costs, client performance and key business metrics.
  • Oversee the Group's consolidated reporting across multiple entities, ensuring intercompany balances and underlying information are accurate.
  • Partner with the CEO and senior stakeholders on annual planning, budgeting and ongoing forecasting.
  • Maintain strong oversight of cash, debtor performance and working capital, with a particular focus on ensuring the Group has good forward visibility of liquidity.
  • Oversee core transactional finance activities including billing, supplier payments, payroll and banking.
  • Take ownership of the Group's tax, statutory reporting and audit requirements, working alongside external advisers where appropriate.
  • Ensure the business remains compliant as the UK's digital tax and invoicing landscape continues to evolve.
  • Review existing finance processes and identify opportunities to simplify, automate and improve the way the team works.
  • Explore practical applications of AI and automation to remove repetitive work and improve the quality and speed of financial information.
  • Work closely with operational teams to understand the commercial drivers behind agency performance and improve financial accountability.
  • Develop profitability and margin reporting, helping the business understand where it is making money and where performance can be improved.
  • Support commercial analysis around major client contracts and post-project performance.
  • Provide financial analysis to support strategic projects, including acquisitions and the subsequent integration of new businesses.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is commercial, proactive and hands-on, rather than a purely technical Financial Controller.

You'll ideally be a qualified accountant with experience running finance within a growing SME or Group environment. You should be comfortable operating with a degree of autonomy and be confident making improvements rather than waiting for someone else to tell you what needs changing.

You'll need to be able to move comfortably between the detail and the bigger picture — understanding the underlying numbers while also being able to explain what they mean to a CEO or senior stakeholder.

Experience of an agency, advertising, media, marketing, digital or similar project-based environment would be highly advantageous.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification.
  • Experience managing and developing a small finance team.
  • Strong financial control and management accounting fundamentals.
  • Experience working across multiple entities and dealing with group reporting.
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with cloud-based finance and reporting systems.
  • A good understanding of budgeting, forecasting, cash management and commercial analysis.
  • Experience improving finance processes and introducing automation or technology.
  • Excellent communication skills and the confidence to work directly with senior leadership.
  • A naturally curious and analytical approach, with the ability to spot issues and act on them.
  • The ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial business where things are continually evolving.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to join a growing marketing agency at an important point in its development. The successful candidate will have genuine influence over how the finance function evolves and will play a significant role in professionalising the infrastructure behind a growing Group.

You'll have exposure to the CEO and senior leadership team, responsibility for a broad finance remit and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on how the business measures performance, manages cash and makes commercial decisions.
