Will’s Story
Will is a young man supported by Thera East Anglia. He has always been very passionate about sport so his support staff contacted Thera’s communications team to help him produce a weekly sportscast. He films it himself using equipment he has and it goes live on Thera East Anglia’s Facebook page.

This led to him being invited to a local radio show to sportcast and his ambitions to move into paid work in the field. He also used this to apply for a job with Channel 4 and travelled down to London for the interview.
His support staff were integral in supporting him to make the most of these opportunities.

Healthcare Advocacy
Around 18 months ago, a gentleman supported by Aspire Living experienced a change in his bowel habits, which led to a diagnosis of bowel cancer. Initially, the doctor recommended end-of-life care, but the team, led by manager Mel, disagreed and believed the gentleman was fit for surgery. After seeking other medical opinions, the gentleman underwent surgery and recovered well, thanks to the team’s support and advocacy. Their actions saved his life, and he continues to live independently in his own home, supported by Aspire Living.

John’s Journey to Employment
Thera South West recently supported a young man named John in finding a new voluntary position close to his new home. This story highlights John’s journey from moving into his new home to securing a voluntary role at a residential community within walking distance. With the assistance of his staff and a community mapping project, John was able to find a position that not only eliminates the stress of public transport but also offers prospects of paid employment. His new role has allowed him to build meaningful relationships, develop social and professional skills, and work in a supportive environment that values disability confidence.

Diana’s Story
Diana is a young woman supported by The Meeting Place, a community-based day support ran by Thera East Anglia. The Meeting Place supports adults with a learning disability to access a wide range of opportunities to access their local communities, build skills, access work placements and improve their wellbeing.
When they first met Diana, she asked TMP to support her with confidence building and to learn new skills in preparation for moving into supported living. At her request, they also helped find and interview for possible work placements in areas of interest to her. She has since begun two separate jobs and her confidence has increased massively.
