The Role and Department
This role has been created at an exciting time for Inclusive Durham at Durham University. Inclusion has been placed at the centre of the University’s overarching strategy, and we have a new Inclusive Durham Framework to embed. The Inclusive Durham’s key role is to help create a culture for both staff and students. Our work aims to ensure that we:
- Have the right leadership attributes;
- Increase diversity at all levels by growing representation of under-represented groups, and develop new and existing opportunities available to members of those groups;
- Enhance a sense of belonging and community in our staff and students; and,
- Continually improve our approach to EDI.
This role involves assisting the Inclusive Durham with a range of activity relating to Inclusive Culture. This internship will provide an opportunity to gain experience, learn and develop new skills, undertaking a range of activities with support and supervision from colleagues. Interns will receive full training and will be supported on an ongoing basis by their allocated line-manager and team members. While not an exhaustive list, this may include:
- Responding to routine business enquiries sent to the EDI Team in a timely manner, escalating any complex queries to more senior colleagues.
- Recording data using office-based software and HR systems.
- Supporting colleagues to organise, plan and prepare for events, meetings and activities.
- Developing communications and marketing materials for diverse staff and student audiences.
- Work effectively with colleagues and students in other areas of the organisation on inclusion-related projects. This may include the opportunity to work on the development of an automated app.
This internship presents an ideal development opportunity; whilst you will gain knowledge and insight into our work, you’ll also gain transferable skills to bring to any professional career. Hours and Location: 15 hours per week. The EDI Team operates on a hybrid basis and the office is located in the Palatine Centre.
The job is subject to a probation period of one month initially.
The post holders (we are looking to recruit up to 3 student interns) must be enrolled on a Durham University degree course for the full 2026/2027 academic year.

To be considered for this role, here are the skills/experience we’re looking for:
Essential Requirements
- A genuine desire to support the University to deliver on its purpose and bring its core values to life, embed the Inclusive Durham Framework, and realise its vision, aims and objectives.
- Excellent organisation and time management skills.
- Proficient user of IT packages (including Office 365) and digital platforms.
- Innovation and creativity to develop new, engaging, accessible EDI content (including the use of Canva or similar design software).
- Excellent communication skills, and proficient in spoken and written English.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Understanding of the need to treat sensitive information confidentiality.
- The ability to engage effectively with people who hold different beliefs and views by safeguarding freedom of speech, creating a safe environment of respectful debate and enhancing a sense of belonging and community in our staff and students.

Desirable Criteria
- An understanding of EDI-related themes and issues.
- Experience of using Microsoft PowerApps.

Typical Role Requirements
Here are the kind of activities that you’ll be asked to undertake and ways in which you’ll be expected to operate.
- Show a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and the University’s value
- Carry out basic administrative tasks.
- Follow instructions from more experienced colleagues to deliver set tasks.
- Support colleagues with the delivery of project work (e.g. Inclusive Durham Framework).
- Assist with arranging meetings and events, and making venue, catering, travel and / or equipment arrangements, as required.
- Support colleagues with promotion and marketing materials.
- Support colleagues with our EDI-related initiatives and events.
- Log and record information on systems
- Support meetings by supporting the meeting Chair with organisational administration tasks.
- Help and cooperate with the rest of your team, supporting colleagues with tasks as required.
- Any other tasks as deemed appropriate to support and contribute to the work of the EDI department.
