West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA),
The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is seeking to appoint up to six independent experts to a new Independent Advisory Panel providing specialist advice, scrutiny, and challenge on major capital investment across the West Midlands.
This is an opportunity for experienced senior professionals to use their expertise to help strengthen the development and delivery of investments that support the region’s long-term ambitions.
These are voluntary, independent advisory appointments who will meet periodically.
The Panel will provide independent expert scrutiny and advice to help ensure WMCA’s proposed capital investments are robust, deliverable, and aligned with regional priorities.
Members will consider whether proposals:
- Are supported by robust evidence and appropriately prioritized.
- Are likely to achieve their intended outcomes and long-term impact.
- Are deliverable within proposed time, budget, resources, and scope.
- Adequately identify and manage key risks and delivery challenges.
Members may also provide advice at key business case stages and contribute to wider reviews and continuous improvement of WMCA’s approach to capital investment.
The Panel is advisory only. Formal assurance, appraisal, funding, and investment decisions will remain with WMCA’s established governance and decision-making bodies.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
