Cardiff Union Services Limited (CUSL)
Cardiff Union Services Limited (CUSL) is the trading arm of Cardiff Students’ Union. The Board is responsible for setting strategic direction and maintaining legal, financial and reputational integrity in all activities. The Union’s current trading activities are focused on delivering late-night entertainment, student lettings, catering and retail, primarily to Cardiff University students. The Union’s trading profits fund our charitable activities and non-commercial services to students.

Mae'r Bwrdd yn gyfrifol am osod cyfeiriad strategol a chynnal uniondeb cyfreithiol, ariannol ac enw da ym mhob gweithgaredd. Mae gweithgareddau masnachu presennol yr Undeb yn canolbwyntio ar ddarparu adloniant hwyr y nos, llety i fyfyrwyr, arlwyo a manwerthu, yn bennaf i fyfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd. Cardiff University Students’ Union is looking for an Independent Director to join the Union’s trading company, Cardiff Union Services Limited.
As we look ahead to our next strategic chapter, we're seeking a passionate and talented individual to help guide the organisation through an exciting period of opportunity and growth.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in housing or lettings who can offer knowledge, skills and experience to influence the strategic direction and development of our services to students.

Person specification:
- Experience in business development and strategic planning, with the ability to contribute constructively to the organisation's growth and long-term sustainability
- Experience running or overseeing a trading business, ideally with P&L responsibility, pricing strategy and revenue growth in a competitive environment
- Skilled at identifying operational, financial, reputational, and compliance risks, and ensuring proportionate controls
- Understanding of charity–subsidiary structures, fiduciary duties, conflicts of interest, and regulatory boundaries (e.g. Charity Commission expectations)
- An awareness of effective Board Governance and a strong commitment to the Nolan Principles
- The ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels including charity trustees, executives, stakeholders and regulators.
- Ability to shape long‑term direction, evaluate new opportunities, and challenge assumptions with data‑driven thinking.
- The ability to constructively question ideas, think strategically and make informed decisions.
- An individual who is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion who actively seeks to remove barriers to equality.
- Commitment to mission‑aligned decision‑making and safeguarding the charity’s reputation.
