About Us
Hello, we’re Starling. We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way. We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone.
Starling Bank is powered by Engine, the banking platform we built ourselves and which we are now rolling out to other banks around the world. We employ more than 3,500 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.
We are looking for a Tax Manager to join our growing tax team. Alongside the Head of Indirect Tax, Senior Corporation Tax Manager and the finance, payroll and HR teams, you will assist with the group’s UK and international VAT/GST and corporation tax affairs. This will include supporting a wide range of tax projects, international expansion projects, and managing tax compliance and tax risk.
This is an exciting time to be joining Starling Bank given its growth trajectory to date and its ambitious expansion plans in both the UK and internationally. You will support these plans from a tax compliance and reporting perspective.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the Group’s UK and international VAT/GST compliance, including quarterly VAT returns, monthly GST returns, partial exemption calculations, optimising input VAT recovery and working collaboratively with advisors.
- Support cross-border expansion by advising on international VAT/GST and corporation tax registration triggers, and place-of-supply rules.
- Assist in managing the Group’s UK and international corporation tax compliance including quarterly tax provisions, quarterly instalment payments and corporation tax returns.
- Support the organisation and wider tax team by taking a leading role in tax risk management and governance, including overseeing and improving the VAT and corporation tax control frameworks.
- Liaison between the finance and tax teams, as required across the taxes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
