The Business Development Manager

Reports to the I&C Commercial Manager

Responsible for securing and developing project-based opportunities with existing wholesale and contractor customers, with a strong focus on growing FP sales and expanding the wider product portfolio beyond core commodity ranges.

The role is centered on identifying, shaping, and converting defined project opportunities, increasing product penetration, and broadening product mix within established relationships. Shifts the focus away from routine account servicing and branch-based activity towards targeted, opportunity-driven engagement.

The role retains responsibility for commercial discussions, including pricing, but places greater emphasis on value, product positioning, and project capture, rather than reactive or transactional selling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Secure and develop project-based opportunities with existing wholesale and contractor customers, prioritizing FP and other higher-margin, value-added product ranges over core commodity products.
  • Act as a strong advocate for FP, positioning it as the preferred solution within project and application-led discussions.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, trusted relationships with wholesalers and key decision-makers across the supply chain, including branch leadership, sales teams, and contractor influencers.
  • Develop relationships with contractor customers to understand project pipelines early and influence product selection towards non-commodity solutions.
  • Drive growth by increasing product mix and margin, expanding customer engagement beyond historic purchasing behavior and price-led buying.
  • Take ownership for achieving agreed sales targets across volume, product mix, and margin, aligned to commercial priorities and FP growth strategy.
  • Lead product-focused customer conversations, clearly articulating features, benefits, and differentiation, positioning FP and premium ranges on value rather than price alone.
  • Shape early project opportunities with customers, working collaboratively to align requirements with FP and margin-accretive solutions.
  • Deliver and support customer training sessions, product briefings, and presentations to wholesalers and contractors to build product knowledge, confidence, and advocacy for FP and priority ranges.
  • Work closely with Product, Commercial, and MID teams to align customer activity with FP growth plans, messaging, and target opportunities.
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of FP-led and higher-margin project opportunities, ensuring accurate forecasting and CRM discipline.
  • Promote a One Europe approach and mindset, identifying market opportunities for European affiliates' products and organic growth.
  • Deliver organic growth and EBITDA improvement across I&C through margin-focused commercial execution, while growing the Specialties business by expanding addressable markets and activating new channels.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
