Job Description
Railway engineering is one of the most important ways that AECOM delivers a better world. We work on some of the UK's largest and most complex rail infrastructure projects, helping to improve urban and inter-city mobility while supporting sustainable transport solutions.
AECOM is a global leader in transportation infrastructure, delivering projects across the rail sector ranging from major enhancement schemes to renewal and maintenance programmes. Our recent projects include major track improvements for the Southern Renewals Enterprise, the reintroduction of passenger services to the Northumberland Line, the Elephant & Castle Station capacity upgrade, key design and asset protection services across Network Rail frameworks, and contributions to High Speed 2.
As an Industrial Placement student within our Rail Project Management team, you will gain valuable hands-on experience supporting the successful delivery of rail infrastructure projects while working alongside experienced project managers and multidisciplinary teams.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with the planning, delivery, and monitoring of railway infrastructure projects.
- Supporting project managers with programme management, scheduling, and resource planning activities.
- Assisting with project reporting, governance, and performance tracking.
- Supporting risk management, cost control, and project control processes.
- Contributing to stakeholder engagement activities and client communications.
- Assisting with contract administration and project documentation.
- Supporting multidisciplinary teams in delivering projects safely, efficiently, and sustainably.
- Gaining exposure to commercial management and project delivery principles within the rail industry.
- Supporting business development and work-winning activities for future rail opportunities.

Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a degree in Project Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Business Management, or a related discipline, with an expected 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or above.
- Strong interest in infrastructure project delivery and the rail sector.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Commercial awareness and an interest in project delivery principles.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Enthusiastic, proactive, and motivated to develop a career in project management.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and manage multiple activities effectively.
- Previous work experience, placement experience, or involvement in project-based activities is advantageous but not essential.
