Job Description

We’re looking for talented and motivated students to join our Traffic Engineering team on an Industrial Placement, where you’ll gain hands-on experience, contribute to real projects, and develop technical skills that will kick-start your career.

As part of AECOM’s Transportation business line, you’ll work alongside experienced traffic engineers, transport planners, and technical specialists to help develop solutions that improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of transport networks.

Our work covers a wide range of traffic engineering projects, from junction and network assessments to traffic modelling, signal design, road safety, and the development of sustainable transport solutions. You’ll have the opportunity to work on projects for local authorities, National Highways, developers, and other public and private sector clients.

What you’ll do

Your placement will provide exposure to a variety of traffic engineering activities, which may include:

  • Supporting the design and assessment of junctions, roundabouts, traffic signals, and urban road networks.
  • Assisting with traffic modelling, microsimulation, and network analysis using industry-standard software such as Junctions, LinSig, and VISSIM.
  • Supporting traffic impact assessments, transport assessments, feasibility studies, and scheme appraisals.
  • Collecting, analysing, and interpreting traffic flow, speed, journey time, and other transport data to inform engineering decisions.
  • Assisting with the development and assessment of traffic management and network improvement schemes.
  • Supporting the preparation and assessment of traffic signal layouts and junction improvement proposals.
  • Contributing to road safety assessments and audits, helping to identify potential issues and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Supporting the development of active travel and sustainable transport schemes, considering the interaction between pedestrians, cyclists, public transport, and general traffic.
  • Assisting with the preparation of technical reports, drawings, calculations, presentations, and other project documentation.
  • Developing an understanding of relevant traffic engineering standards, guidance, legislation, and industry best practice.
  • Attending site visits and traffic surveys to understand existing conditions and collect information to support project development.
  • Working collaboratively with traffic engineers, highway engineers, transport planners, technicians, and other disciplines to deliver high-quality solutions for clients.
  • Contributing to project meetings and developing an understanding of how technical recommendations are communicated to clients and stakeholders.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
