Company Description

Working as a partnership, both Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust have a shared vision for excellence in care for our patients and communities; with a set of strategic aims underpinning how we will achieve this.

The single corporate service is delivered across both organisations. You may be based at either IWT or PHU and individuals may be required to undertake business travel between sites. For leaders managing staff across multi-site locations, you will need to be visible and provide in person leadership. The arrangements and frequency will be agreed locally.

NHS Band 8a

Salary: £57,528 - £64,750 per annum

Hours Per Week: Part time 30 hours

Contract Type: Fixed term Maternity cover

We are offering an exciting development opportunity for an experienced senior nurse to join our Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) teams across Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and Isle of Wight NHS Trust. This secondment is ideal for a motivated leader who is passionate about patient safety, quality improvement, and driving high standards of infection prevention practice across a group model.

We are looking for a confident, compassionate senior nurse with:

  • Strong IPC knowledge and experience.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively across teams and organisations.
  • A proactive, solution-focused approach to improving patient care.
  • Experience influencing practice at ward, service, or organisational level.

As IPC Matron, you will play a key role in supporting both Trusts to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based infection prevention and control. Working closely with the Deputy DIPC, IPC Drs, and wider clinical teams, you will:

  • Provide visible, professional leadership across both organisations.
  • Responsible for the Operational Management of the IPC Team.
  • Lead and influence improvements in clinical practice, patient pathways, and environmental standards.
  • Offer expert advice during outbreaks, incidents, and quality reviews.
  • Champion best practice, education, and engagement with staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Contribute to harmonising IPC policies, resources, and communication across the group model.

This role will involve regular cross-site working, with flexibility to support teams at both PHU and IWT.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current RN with current NMC registration.
  • Degree level qualification and/or evidence of working towards Masters in IPC.

Desirable

  • Recognised teaching qualification / experience.
  • Management Qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience of care management, experience of working in a senior role (Band 7) and with evidence of professional development.
  • Substantial number of years working within infection prevention and control speciality

Desirable

  • Evidence of developing policy, guidelines and managing resources
  • Demonstrate extensive relevant clinical experience of working in an acute hospital setting at a senior level
  • Leadership development programme
  • Budget management

  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as a part of a team. Self-motivated.
  • Able to deal with difficult and sensitive situations tactfully and minimise emotional upset
  • Able to understand sensitive political issues
  • Critical appraisal skills
  • Evidence of success in leading/managing significant and sustained change
  • Effective people management skills.
  • Ability to negotiate, influence and escalate and seek advice
  • Ability to interpret and analyse data, meet deadlines
  • Intermediate IT skills and presentation skills
