About the Role
Peel Hunt is looking for an enthusiastic IT Developer with strong Core Java skills, a passion for technology, and a desire to work across a diverse business and technology landscape.
You'll join our experienced Development team of six, building and enhancing in-house systems that support real-time equity trading, electronic market making, business workflow management, and internal data analysis. The team plays a highly visible role across the firm, delivering solutions that directly support our business.
Operating within a flat team structure, the Development team takes ownership of its working practices, with shared accountability and collaborative decision-making. You'll report to the Head of Development and work closely with colleagues across TechOps, Technology Programme Management, Data Technology & Analytics, and Systems.
Our Technology Environment
You'll work across a modern and varied technology stack, including:
- Java 25 server-side applications, supported by Python for lightweight scripting
- React web applications
- SQL Server databases and C# native front ends
- KDB time-series storage and analytics
- Informatica UltraMessaging and Chronicle infrastructure
- Influx and Grafana for monitoring and observability
- Linux environments, including RHEL 9
- Development tools including IntelliJ, Rider, Git, JIRA/YouTrack, and TeamCity
- Experimental use of Claude Code

What You'll Do
- Develop and deliver software solutions to solve a broad range of business challenges
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and identify the most effective solutions
- Work independently or alongside other developers, depending on project scope and complexity
- Plan and manage projects to meet deadlines while adapting to changing priorities
- Support colleagues and seek input when needed to ensure high-quality, supportable outcomes
- Contribute to greenfield projects, enhancements to existing applications, and ongoing maintenance
- Provide second-line support for systems owned by the Development team
What We're Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience
- At least three years' experience in server-side Core Java development
- Experience building high-performance, distributed, and multi-threaded systems
- Understanding of system architecture and the separation of interconnected components
- End-to-end involvement in software development and delivery
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to break down complex challenges
- Commitment to producing high-quality, maintainable code
- Experience with automated, unit, and functional testing, alongside a pragmatic approach to testing practices
- Working knowledge of Linux
- Ideally a 2:1 degree or above in a technical discipline

Desirable Experience
Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:
- React (a key technology within the team)
- SQL databases and query development, including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or Sybase
- C# GUI development
- Python scripting or programming, including libraries such as SciPy
- KDB querying, management, or maintenance
- Chronicle, Influx, or Grafana
Financial services experience is not essential. We place greater value on strong technical capability, creativity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
