Role: Experienced IT Support Engineer plus DC exp

Location: Romsey, UK

Working Pattern: Onsite (Mon-Fri 9 AM – 5 PM)

Rate: 200/day

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced IT Support Engineer to provide hands-on support at a development and manufacturing site. This is a broad onsite role covering developers’ PCs, specialist lab and manufacturing equipment, Windows servers, virtualisation, server-room infrastructure and IT assets.

As a key onsite IT resource, you will investigate and resolve a wide range of technical issues, working independently while collaborating with remote IT teams and third-party vendors. Your work will help maintain a reliable and secure IT environment for the site’s development and manufacturing teams.

Skills & Experience

The successful candidate will be an experienced IT professional with a strong hands-on technical background and the ability to support a diverse engineering and manufacturing environment.

They should have:

  • Strong experience supporting Windows desktop and server environments.
  • Good working knowledge of Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server technologies.
  • Strong hardware, software and operating system troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience supporting server and network infrastructure.
  • Good understanding of LAN, WAN, VLAN, switches, routers, SFPs and fibre/copper connectivity.
  • Experience with Microsoft deployment and patching technologies such as SCCM, WDS, MDT and WSUS.
  • Experience supporting Hyper-V virtualisation environments.
  • Experience with IT asset and inventory management.
  • Strong documentation and organisational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong customer-service mindset, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical users.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise effectively and take ownership of technical issues through to resolution.
  • A proactive, self-motivated approach with a willingness to learn and develop.

Key Responsibilities

End-User & Engineering IT Support

  • Hands-on support for engineering and manufacturing users.
  • Windows 10/11 desktops, laptops and specialist engineering workstations.
  • Hardware, software and system troubleshooting.
  • Break/fix support and support for IT equipment within laboratory and manufacturing environments.
  • AV troubleshooting and coordination with OEM and third-party support providers.
  • Maintain technical documentation, processes and procedures.

Windows OS Ecosystem

  • Support Windows Server/Desktop OS.
  • BitLocker, endpoint protection and related security technologies.
  • Monitor Windows infrastructure health and performance.
  • Support OS updates, security patching and compliance activities.

Server Room, Lab & Network Infrastructure

  • Install, rack, cable and provision physical servers and network equipment.
  • Support patch panels and fibre/copper cabling.
  • Install and support workstations, servers and associated peripherals.
  • Troubleshoot physical infrastructure and hardware issues.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and identify potential issues before they affect users.
  • Provide hands-on support for onsite lab network infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot LAN, WAN, VLAN and general network connectivity.
  • Support switches, routers, SFPs and fibre/copper connectivity.
  • Apply practical knowledge of 1GigE and 10GigE networking.

OS Deployment & Software Management

  • Configure and deploy operating system images across desktops, engineering workstations, lab systems and supported devices.
  • Support Microsoft deployment technologies including WDS, MDT and SCCM.
  • Support Windows Update and WSUS-based patching.
  • Deploy third-party applications, utilities, drivers and internally developed tools.
  • Perform firmware and application updates in line with agreed compliance requirements.

Virtualisation

  • Support virtual environments using Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Provision and maintain virtual machines, templates and associated libraries.
  • Support Microsoft System Center technologies, including Virtual Machine Manager.
  • Troubleshoot virtualisation infrastructure issues.

Asset & Inventory Management

  • Maintain accurate hardware and software records within the central asset management system.
  • Perform hardware audits and inventory checks.
  • Manage onsite infrastructure spares and equipment.
  • Support goods receiving and asset-tagging activities.
  • Track hardware maintenance and renewal contracts.
  • Coordinate hardware replacement and support activities with OEM and third-party vendors.
