Cloud Infrastructure Engineer (Contract, Outside IR35)

About the Company
Our client is an established organisation running business critical workloads across Google Cloud and AWS. Their technology function has invested heavily in Infrastructure as Code and automation, and they are bringing in experienced contract talent to support a period of sustained infrastructure growth. It is a collaborative environment where cloud engineers are trusted to make real architectural decisions.
The Role
This is a hands on Cloud Infrastructure Engineer contract covering both GCP and AWS environments. You will work closely with development teams to design and maintain the Terraform modules and Ansible playbooks that underpin deployments across development, staging and production. There is real autonomy here: you will be trusted to architect scalable, secure solutions rather than simply follow a backlog. It suits someone comfortable owning infrastructure end to end, from network design through to incident response.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and maintain Terraform modules and configurations across GCP and AWS environments
- Build and manage Ansible playbooks for configuration management, deployment and automation
- Architect scalable, highly available cloud solutions that meet business and security requirements
- Collaborate with development teams to align infrastructure with application and performance needs
- Monitor cloud resources and drive cost optimisation and governance best practice
- Implement security controls, compliance frameworks and disaster recovery solutions
- Automate routine operational tasks to improve reliability and reduce manual effort
- Lead incident response and troubleshooting across complex cloud infrastructure
- Design network architecture, including VPCs, subnets, load balancers and connectivity
- Maintain clear documentation for infrastructure designs, procedures and troubleshooting

What You'll Need
Essential:
- 3+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure engineering, systems administration or a similar role
- Strong hands on expertise with GCP (Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Storage, VPC, IAM, Cloud SQL, Cloud Functions) and AWS (EC2, EKS, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS, Lambda)
- Advanced Terraform experience for Infrastructure as Code development and management
- Extensive Ansible experience for configuration management, automation and orchestration
- Strong Linux/Unix administration and networking fundamentals
- Proficiency in Bash and Python for scripting and automation
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and their integration with infrastructure automation
- Solid knowledge of cloud security best practice and compliance frameworks

Desirable / Nice to Have:
- GCP Professional Cloud Architect or DevOps Engineer, or AWS Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer Professional certification
- Experience with GitOps tooling (ArgoCD, Flux) and service mesh technologies (Istio, Anthos Service Mesh)
- Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, Cloud Operations Suite)
