IT Infrastructure Engineer (Contract)

Location: Portsmouth (Onsite)

Travel: Occasional travel to dockyards and customer sites across the UK (advance notice provided)

Security Clearance: Active SC Clearance required to start (candidates already holding SC clearance highly desirable)

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to support the delivery, deployment and ongoing support of a modern hosting and infrastructure platform within a secure defence environment. Working as part of a collaborative technical team, you will play a key role in building, deploying and supporting enterprise infrastructure services while ensuring a high standard of service delivery.

This role is primarily based onsite in Portsmouth, with occasional travel required for installation and deployment activities across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, deploy and support enterprise infrastructure platforms.
  • Administer VMware hosted services and virtual environments.
  • Provide 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support for infrastructure services.
  • Support and maintain Microsoft Windows Server and Active Directory environments.
  • Configure and manage Dell server hardware and iDRAC.
  • Maintain technical and operational documentation.
  • Support asset management, logistics and supplier engagement activities.
  • Participate in ITIL-based change management processes.
  • Work closely with project and operational teams to deliver infrastructure services.
  • Support onsite installation and deployment activities when required.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience administering VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) environments.
  • Good working knowledge of VMware vCenter 7.0 or later.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft Windows Server 2019/2022.
  • Strong Active Directory administration experience.
  • Knowledge of Dell server hardware and iDRAC management.
  • Experience providing 2nd and 3rd line support within enterprise environments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate technical documentation.
  • Experience working within ITIL change management processes.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience using Remedy.
  • Office automation and documentation management skills.
  • Experience supporting IT services within defence, maritime or secure environments.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong stakeholder management and supplier engagement skills.

Qualifications

  • ITIL Foundation certification.
  • Microsoft certification (MCSA or equivalent preferred).
  • VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) certification desirable.

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the programme, candidates must hold active SC Clearance or be eligible for immediate transfer. Candidates already holding valid SC Clearance are strongly preferred.
