SC Cleared Infrastructure Engineer (Outside IR35)

Location: Hybrid, Portsmouth area, allow one day a week
Contract: Until the end of March 2027
Rate: £500 to £525 per day
Start: ASAP
You must hold active SC Clearance to be eligible for this role.

This role has been deemed Outside IR35.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced SC Cleared Infrastructure Engineer to join a greenfield Defence programme, helping to design and build a new secure infrastructure environment from the ground up.

This is a hands-on design and build role rather than BAU support. You will work across Windows infrastructure, Linux, virtualisation and security, helping establish a secure environment incorporating hardening, monitoring, logging and Zero Trust principles.

The position is predominantly remote, with approximately four days per month onsite near Portsmouth.

  • Design and build secure infrastructure within a greenfield environment.
  • Work across Windows Server 2022/2025, Active Directory, Group Policy and Windows 11, alongside some Linux/Ubuntu.
  • Configure and harden Microsoft infrastructure and virtualisation solutions, including Hyper-V.
  • Implement infrastructure security controls and Secure by Design principles.
  • Work with networking and security components, including firewalls, identity and access controls.
  • Support SIEM, centralised logging, monitoring and observability, potentially including Splunk.
  • Support vulnerability management, remediation and technical assurance.
  • Produce technical designs, build documentation and configuration baselines.
  • Investigate technologies and environments, taking solutions from initial requirements through to implementation.

The Person

You will be a self-starting Infrastructure Engineer who is comfortable working within greenfield, secure environments.

You should have:

  • Strong Windows infrastructure engineering experience.
  • Windows Server, Active Directory and Group Policy experience.
  • Microsoft virtualisation experience, ideally Hyper-V.
  • Working knowledge of Linux/Ubuntu.
  • Experience building infrastructure environments from the ground up.
  • Strong security hardening experience.
  • Knowledge of SIEM, logging, monitoring and observability; Splunk would be beneficial.
  • Experience with vulnerability management and security configuration/compliance.
  • An understanding of networking and firewall technologies.
  • Previous experience within Defence, Government or another secure environment.
  • The ability to work autonomously and turn requirements into practical technical solutions.
