Position Summary
The Infrastructure Engineer (L4) is the Hosting team's subject matter expert for VMware NSX-T and platform networking, and a well-rounded engineer across the wider VMware private cloud stack. The role owns NSX-T design standards, escalation and capability uplift within the team, while contributing to the day-to-day engineering and operation of the full private cloud estate — vSphere, vSAN, VCF, backup and disaster recovery — for customers with demanding availability and recovery expectations.

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer underpins this mission by ensuring critical infrastructure services are engineered, operated, and evolved to meet stringent regulatory, availability, and recovery expectations.
Essential Roles & Responsibilities
Infrastructure Engineering
- Design, implement, and support complex infrastructure solutions across on-premises, private cloud (VMware) environments including VMware NSX-T
- Lead planning, execution and disaster recovery activities from a VMware platform and networking perspective.
- Ensure infrastructure services are available, performant, and operating as designed
- Support the team to operate enterprise-grade backup, recovery, and data protection solutions, ensuring alignment with RPO/RTO requirements
Senior Technical Leadership
- Act as the recognised NSX-T authority within the Hosting team
- Own NSX-T design standards, reference architectures, patterns and build documentation
- Deliver structured knowledge transfer, training and mentoring to raise NSX-T capability across the team, reducing single-person dependency
- Represent platform networking in design authority, change advisory and architecture forums
- Own the NSX-T upgrade and lifecycle roadmap across the estate
- Act as senior technical escalation points for infrastructure and networking related incidents and changes
- Lead root cause analysis for major incidents
- Mentor junior engineers and support skills development across the team
Customer Delivery & Engagement
- Act as a customer-facing technical lead during complex implementations and migrations
- Support pre-sales activities including solution design, validation, and technical assurance
- Provide confident, credible technical communication to senior customer stakeholders
- Ensure customer solutions are delivered to time, cost, quality, and regulatory expectations
Service Transition & Lifecycle Management
- Work closely with Project Management and Service Delivery teams to ensure smooth transition into live service.
- Ensure infrastructure services are fully documented, tested, and operationally ready
- Support lifecycle activities including upgrades, refreshes, and decommissioning
- Participate in on-call rotations and support out-of-hours activities where required

Continuous Improvement & Product Development
- Identify and deliver improvements to infrastructure, platforms, tooling, and processes
- Support product and service development including vendor selection, testing, and operationalisation
- Maintain and improve documentation, runbooks, and knowledge artefacts
Financial Services & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure infrastructure and backup services comply with financial services regulations and frameworks (e.g. FCA, PRA, DORA, ISO 27001, SOC)
- Design and operate solutions that support operational resilience, business continuity, and disaster recovery
- Maintain audit-ready documentation, recovery evidence, and control records
- Support regulatory audits, customer assurance activities, and risk assessments
- Ensure data protection, encryption, access control, and segregation requirements are met
Governance & Reporting
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, diagrams, and recovery artefacts
- Contribute to service reporting, risk tracking, and improvement actions
- Support governance forums, service reviews, and technical design authorities
- Ensure infrastructure metrics support compliance and assurance needs

Critical Competencies – Technical Fit
Essential:
- Proven experience as a senior infrastructure engineer supporting VMware mission-critical environments
- Deep, hands-on experience designing, implementing and operating VMware NSX-T / NSX 4.x in production, including Tier-0 and Tier-1 gateways, edge nodes and edge clusters, segments and overlay/VLAN transport zones, and NSX Manager lifecycle and upgrades
- Distributed Firewall and micro-segmentation policy design, plus gateway firewalling and NAT
- Dynamic routing and peering between NSX and physical fabric (BGP, ECMP, VRF), and NSX load balancing / IPsec & L2 VPN
- Troubleshooting overlay networking end to end (Geneve/TEP, MTU, uplink profiles, traceflow, packet capture)
- Strong understanding of operational resilience, DR, and business continuity requirements
- Ability to analyse, design, implement, and support solutions to time, cost, and quality targets
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including customer-facing engagement
- Relevant technical qualifications or equivalent experience (e.g. VCP-NV, CCNA/CCNP)
Desirable:
- Experience within a managed service provider (MSP) or regulated services environment
- Automation and infrastructure-as-code for VMware platforms — PowerCLI, Terraform, Ansible or equivalent — and comfort scripting repeatable operational tasks
- Experience in backup and recovery technologies, including enterprise backup platforms and recovery testing
- Knowledge of backup platforms such as Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, or similar
- Knowledge of Azure and hybrid integration
- Experience with service transition and ITIL-aligned delivery models
- Familiarity with PCI-DSS and other financial services security standards
- Advanced technical certifications (e.g. VMware, Cisco, Veeam)

Shift & Working Pattern
- Standard business hours, with participation in an on call rota (1 in 4, compensated)
- Occasional weekend engineering coverage will be required, typically limited to a small number of planned weekends per year, to support business continuity, resilience testing, or disaster recovery activities
