This role is based out of our New Bailey, Manchester office. We have a hybrid working model of 3 days together and 2 days wherever.

Due to the nature of the work, you will need to be eligible for security clearance+.

About The Role

The purpose of this role is to help create, implement and support technical solutions that impact internally and/or externally. It supports the execution of the software engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT’s commercial strategy through cross functional project and technical delivery and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.

The role is to work with other engineers build and support network and computing components of the prisons platform, working closely with internal teams, Openreach engineering people and external customers. It is key to providing outstanding service to our customers by maintaining and improving the products we supply them with.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Manages the implementation of high-level designs for stable network and infrastructure environments that meet the needs of BT, are shared with partners, and are compliant with current security, privacy, and audit requirements
  • Leads the maintenance of IT Infrastructure components, tools or locations and executes the designs on services (e.g., network, security, storage, compute), which are to be produced in line with design standards
  • Provides advanced technical knowledge and expertise where needed to support managers, principals or technical experts to resolve complex issues
  • Leads the collaboration with stakeholders across application development, enterprise architecture, infrastructure and cyber security teams to implement an effective product roadmap
  • Leads the day-to-day support for internal tools and system health, as well as infrastructure implemented for all projects and managing customer support contracts
  • Leads the collaboration with technical architects, using advanced technical knowledge and past experience to translate architectural designs into operations
  • Writes documentation and builds tooling that makes the infrastructure easier to use and manage
  • Drives the documentation of the processes, measurements, and assessments required for both individual work and projects
  • Leads the activities and collaborates with team members in the installation, configuration, maintenance, support, and optimisation for all network and infrastructure hardware, software and communication links
  • Audits and reports on the performance and the overall health of the network and infrastructure and recommends or initiates corrective action or enhancements
  • Champions, continuously develops and shares with team knowledge on emerging trends and changes in infrastructure engineering best practices and industry standards
  • Mentors other infrastructure engineers, helping to improve the team’s abilities by acting as a technical resource

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Advanced IP Networking, including Cisco Firewalls and Cisco ACI, Load Balancing (nginx exposure advantageous)
  • Advanced Windows (AD, DNS, GPOs, WSUS, server management) & Linux (RHEL/OEL) Administration with strong scripting and automation capabilities (at least two of PowerShell, Bash, Perl, Ansible) including system updates and reporting. Familiarity with open-source software/infrastructure solutions
  • Comprehensive IT Security Expertise, including security management, monitoring, compliance, and infrastructure security. Superior Troubleshooting Skills over a wide range of different technologies

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Advanced monitoring and alerting using SNMP, WMI including bespoke scripting (PRTG or equivalent)
  • Database administration, SQL, and data extraction
  • Cloud computing platforms and services, including VMware and enterprise storage technologies
  • Microservices and service-oriented architectures, including containerisation using Docker
  • VoIP/sip telephony devices and technology (Asterisk exposure advantageous)
  • Excellent Communication Skills
  • IT Security Management
  • Continuous upskilling and ability to quickly learn new technologies
  • Agile delivery methodologies
