About The Role
The North West Route is building a talent pool for future Infrastructure Maintenance Engineer opportunities. By joining our talent pool, you'll be considered for upcoming permanent and secondment opportunities across Liverpool as and when they become available.
In this essential leadership role, you'll lead a large multi-disciplinary team to deliver the inspection, maintenance, and enhancement of critical Infrastructure assets. You'll play a key role in driving improvements in safety, reliability, and asset performance, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. By embedding best practice, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and delivering strategic performance initiatives, you'll help create a safer, more efficient, and resilient railway for our customers and communities.

Salary And Benefits
Salary: Band 2C, starting at £85,395 and increasing to £104,160 plus car allowance.

Your Experience And Skills
You will drive a strategic approach to asset management, using engineering expertise and asset intelligence to identify deterioration trends, optimise maintenance interventions, and determine the most effective renewal strategies to improve reliability and reduce whole-life asset costs. Leading continuous improvement initiatives, you will enhance safety, performance, productivity, and efficiency across the network, while working closely with Asset Management teams to coordinate renewal programmes and manage asset risk.
The role is responsible for ensuring engineering and maintenance activities are delivered in full compliance with company standards, policies, and regulatory requirements. You will establish robust assurance and governance processes, proactively identifying and addressing non-compliance, leading investigations into accidents and incidents, and acting as the key interface with regulatory bodies such as the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).

A key aspect of the role is developing a skilled, competent, and resilient engineering workforce. You will champion professional development, succession planning, competence management, and employee wellbeing, ensuring your team has the capability and resources required to safely deliver business objectives. Through regular safety tours, inspections, monitoring activities, and cultural leadership, you will drive continuous improvements in health, safety, and workforce engagement.
Working collaboratively with stakeholders, suppliers, and delivery partners, you will oversee the introduction of new systems and technologies, ensure the effective discharge of CDM responsibilities, and fulfil duties under the Network Rail Engineering Management Plan, including acting as Construction Engineering Manager (CEM) where required. You will also lead the development and delivery of weather resilience and preparedness strategies, ensuring the network remains safe, compliant, and operational during adverse conditions.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering leader to influence strategic asset performance, develop future engineering talent, and play a pivotal role in delivering a safer, more reliable, and sustainable railway for passengers and freight customers.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
- Chartered engineer
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
- NEBOSH certificate
- Detailed knowledge of rail engineering discipline and other rail engineering functional disciplines
- Successful experience in maintenance management, processes and techniques
- Detailed knowledge of compliance management processes and relevant standards and procedures
- Formal Accident & Incident Investigation
- Knowledge of operational railway environment
- Knowledge of CDM regulations and procedures.
- Successful experience as a people manager
- Proven interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills
We would also like but it isn't crucial to have/to be:
- Experience in Oracle (BMIS)
