Innovation Technologist

Job Introduction

Are you passionate about innovation, sustainability and the future of construction materials? Do you thrive on turning new ideas into practical, real-world solutions?

We are looking for an Innovation Technologist to join our team at the National Concrete Laboratory in Shawell, where you will play a key role in developing the next generation of concrete technologies for some of the UK's most important infrastructure projects. Working across sectors including nuclear, defence, energy, highways, rail and water, you will help shape innovative, low-carbon and high-performance concrete solutions that deliver lasting value for customers and communities

This is a unique opportunity to combine laboratory research, technical expertise, field trials and customer engagement to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge construction materials and sustainable technologies.

Please note that this position is for a fixed-term contract of two and a half years

What You'll Be Doing

As an Innovation Technologist, you will lead and support the development, testing, validation and implementation of innovative concrete and cementitious solutions from concept through to commercial application

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing innovative concrete mixes and material solutions for critical infrastructure applications
  • Investigating emerging technologies, including low-carbon binders, alternative cementitious materials, carbon reduction technologies, advanced admixtures and digital concrete solutions
  • Planning and managing laboratory testing programmes, analysing technical data and producing detailed technical reports and recommendations
  • Delivering laboratory and production-scale trials to validate new materials and technologies
  • Supporting major infrastructure projects through technical expertise, approvals and specification compliance
  • Collaborating with customers, universities, suppliers, research organisations and internal stakeholders to drive innovation and solve complex technical challenges
  • Supporting sustainability and decarbonisation objectives by improving material efficiency, durability and embodied carbon performance
  • Presenting technical findings and promoting innovation best practice across the business

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
