Inorganic Synthesis Chemist / Colloidal Chemist

Central Oxford – Onsite

£40,000–£50,000 depending on experience

Permanent, full-time

We are supporting an innovative advanced materials organisation developing high-performance inorganic materials and nanomaterial technologies for a range of cutting-edge applications.

Joining a collaborative R&D team, you will design, develop and scale synthetic routes for inorganic materials, nanoparticles and colloidal systems.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct practical, laboratory-based synthesis of inorganic and colloidal materials.
  • Control nucleation, crystal growth, particle size, morphology and composition.
  • Develop and optimise routes using Schlenk line chemistry, sol-gel synthesis, precipitation, hydrothermal and solvothermal methods.
  • Interpret characterisation data to improve performance, yield and reproducibility.
  • Troubleshoot complex synthetic challenges and scale successful laboratory processes.
  • Maintain accurate experimental records, technical reports, protocols and SOPs.

About you:

  • PhD or MSc in inorganic chemistry, colloidal chemistry, nanochemistry, materials chemistry or a related discipline—or equivalent industrial experience.
  • Strong hands-on synthetic chemistry and bench-based laboratory experience.
  • Experience in colloidal inorganic synthesis and air/moisture-sensitive chemistry using Schlenk line techniques.
  • Sound knowledge of precursor chemistry, reaction mechanisms, nucleation and crystal growth.
  • A methodical, curious and solutions-focused approach to experimental development.
