Overview

Collects and prepares blood specimens for laboratory testing, represents the laboratory to patients and their families. Reviews physician orders, obtains clinical and demographic information, prints draw lists, and verifies patient identification and correct specimen type for tests requested.

Responsibilities

  • Performs blood collection procedures using established phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture, micro-collection, blood cultures, bleeding times, therapeutic phlebotomy, and Blood Bank specimen collection.
  • Ensures positive patient identification prior to specimen collection and accurately labels specimens at the point of service.
  • Prioritizes phlebotomy assignments and STAT requests to ensure timely specimen collection and support efficient patient care and clinical operations.
  • Responds effectively to fluctuations in workload, patient volumes, and scheduling needs, adjusting priorities as necessary to support departmental operations.
  • Utilizes downtime productively by assisting with departmental responsibilities and identifying opportunities to support the laboratory and patient care areas.
  • Answers telephone calls professionally, schedules testing as appropriate, communicates accurate information, and promptly responds to STAT collection requests from patient care areas.
  • Directs calls and inquiries to the appropriate department, team member, or resource when necessary.
  • Accurately obtains, verifies, and enters patient information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS), including patient registration, demographics, and insurance information, as applicable.
  • Enters laboratory test orders, prints appropriate specimen labels, and ensures specimens are accurately labeled in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains phlebotomy equipment, collection supplies, baskets, and carts to ensure appropriate inventory levels, cleanliness, organization, and safe operation.
  • Maintains patient collection areas in a clean, organized, and professional manner.
  • Adheres to established infection prevention, biohazard, and safety practices, including appropriate glove changes, disposal of blood collection materials, specimen handling, pneumatic tube utilization, and manual transport of specimens to the laboratory.
  • Demonstrates a professional, compassionate, and patient-centered bedside manner during all patient interactions.
  • Ensures specimens are properly packaged, handled, and delivered to Specimen Processing in a timely manner to support accurate and efficient laboratory testing.
  • Performs medical necessity checks prior to outpatient phlebotomy services, as applicable.
  • Understands the Phlebotomist-Registrar's role within the overall operation of the laboratory and its impact on patient care, customer service, departmental efficiency, and healthcare operations.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork by assisting coworkers and responding to changing departmental and patient care needs.
  • Serves as a resource to team members and assists with the orientation, training, and education of new employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the needs of the Laboratory and organization.

  • Will consider entry level graduates.
  • Able to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital employees and the public. Able to work under pressure. Willingness to increase knowledge of laboratory/hospital functions. Demonstrates creativity and initiative in problem solving.

Credentials

  • Phlebotomy certification within 1 year.

Education

  • Essential: High school graduate or equivalent

Pay

  • Entry: USD $17.50/Hr.
  • Max: USD $27.13/Hr.
