About the Role

AES Smart Metering Ltd. is looking for an experienced and fully qualified Installation Electrician to join our growing renewable energy division, primarily supporting the electrical installation of Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) systems across the Reading, Swindon and surrounding areas.

Previous heat pump or renewable energy experience is not essential. Full product and system-specific training will be provided for the right candidate.

We are looking for an experienced electrician with a strong background in electrical installation who can work safely and independently, carry out installation and testing to a high standard, and complete the electrical works associated with domestic and light-commercial heat pump installations.

Key Responsibilities

The role will include:

  • Electrical installation associated with Air Source Heat Pump systems.
  • Installation of new dedicated supplies from existing consumer units and distribution boards.
  • Installation and termination of AC power supplies to heat pump equipment.
  • Installation of local isolation and associated protective devices.
  • Consumer unit and distribution board alterations where required.
  • Installation of SWA, T&E and other appropriate wiring systems.
  • Installation of containment, cable management and associated electrical equipment.
  • Installation and connection of control supplies and associated electrical controls.
  • Assessment of existing electrical installations prior to connection of new equipment.
  • Verification that existing earthing, bonding and protective arrangements are suitable.
  • Initial verification, inspection and testing of new electrical works.
  • Completion of electrical certification and test documentation.
  • Identification and reporting of existing electrical defects or non-compliances.
  • Fault finding and rectification where required.
  • Working alongside heat pump engineers, plumbers and other installation personnel.
  • Liaising professionally with customers and site representatives.
  • Ensuring installations comply with current BS 7671 requirements, company procedures and manufacturers' instructions.
  • Working in accordance with company Health & Safety procedures, RAMS and relevant site requirements.
  • Maintaining the company vehicle, tools and test equipment provided.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must be fully qualified electricians and hold the following qualifications or recognised equivalents:

  • JIB/ECS Gold Card – Installation Electrician / Approved Electrician
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation / Electrotechnical Systems
  • AM2 Assessment
  • BS 7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations – 18th Edition, including current amendment requirements
  • Inspection & Testing qualification – City & Guilds 2391 or equivalent
  • Legacy City & Guilds 2394 and 2395 qualifications will also be accepted where applicable
  • Appropriate electrical apprenticeship or recognised industry qualification route
  • Full UK driving licence

Inspection and Testing qualification is essential for this position.

Candidates should be competent in completing electrical installation work independently, carrying out initial verification and producing accurate electrical certification.

Experience Required

The successful candidate should have proven experience as an installation electrician, ideally covering:

  • Domestic and/or commercial electrical installations
  • Consumer units and distribution boards
  • New circuits and circuit alterations
  • SWA installation and termination
  • Protective device selection
  • Earthing and bonding
  • Electrical isolation and safe working practices
  • Inspection, testing and certification
  • Electrical fault finding

Experience within Air Source Heat Pumps, Solar PV, Battery Storage, EV charging or other renewable technologies would be advantageous but is NOT essential.

Renewable Energy Training

AES recognises that experienced, fully qualified electricians may not yet have worked within the heat pump sector.

For the right candidate, full training will be provided in Air Source Heat Pump electrical installations and the associated renewable technologies used by AES.

We are therefore particularly interested in experienced electricians who want to move into the rapidly growing renewable energy sector and develop their skills beyond conventional electrical installation work.

Personal Requirements

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Professional and customer focused
  • Able to work independently and as part of a wider installation team
  • Confident making electrical installation decisions on site
  • Competent in inspection, testing and fault finding
  • Able to read electrical drawings and manufacturers' installation information
  • Organised and capable of completing installation documentation accurately
  • Safety conscious with a high standard of workmanship
  • Willing to undertake additional manufacturer and renewable technology training
  • Flexible regarding travel and occasional overtime where projects require it

Salary & Benefits

£45,000–£50,000 per annum, dependent on qualifications and experience.

The position will predominantly cover Reading, Swindon and surrounding areas, although occasional travel outside the core area may be required depending on project requirements.
