INSTALLATION TECHNICIAN
Fives HPM | Aftermarket Americas
This is a highly travel-oriented technical position with an immediate focus on supporting a major equipment installation project in the Decatur, Alabama area. Technicians will be responsible for the installation, startup, alignment, checkout, and service of machine tools and associated equipment while working closely with customer personnel, contractors, and cross-functional teams.
Following completion of the Decatur project, technicians will have the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the United States to support additional customer installations, service needs, and technical projects. This is a heavy-travel, field-based role that requires flexibility for frequent overnight and multi-day assignments based on customer and business needs.
The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, experience working with CNC-controlled equipment, and the ability to take ownership of installation activities in the field. We are seeking a self-motivated technician who enjoys hands-on technical work, problem-solving, travel, and delivering exceptional support directly at customer facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Report and communicate schedules, issues and daily updates with Manager.
- Recommend design improvements, seek to increase efficiency in different work areas.
- Operate machines as needed throughout the course of the build cycle.
- Install, maintain, and instruct operators and maintenance personnel on computer controls associated with standalone machine tools.
- Utilize various types of test instruments, such as VOM and an oscilloscope; working knowledge of laser measurement devices.
- Manage all functions of a machine installation; work with and instruct customer’s engineering employees, customer contracted Millwrights and Riggers, Electricians, and Pipe Fitters. Supervise and manage all individuals associated with the machine installation and check-out.
- Assist with Run-Offs required for machine acceptance.
- Identify issues and delays that effect the performance of each install project.
- Perform Health Checks and Recertification on machines in the field.
- Perform Service on machines after installation by analyzing the malfunctions, making minor adjustments, recommending and assisting with repair parts orders, and performing actual repair work.
- Prepare service reports, expense reports, installation reports, and other special reports as requested by the supervisor.
- Use a laptop computer to interface/troubleshoot axis drives, spindle drives and vendor controls.

Qualifications
- Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school.
- Four to six years related experience and/or training.
- High level mechanical and electrical aptitude.
- High level troubleshooting machine tool issues.
- Experience with CNC controls such as FANUC, Siemens or Heidenhain, preferred but general CNC controls knowledge is acceptable.
- Ability to handle Customer and OEM factory deadlines and issues.
- Read and interpret Assembly drawings, layouts, and Bills of Material.
- Read and interpret Electrical schematics.
- Work with English and Metric measurements.
- Operate gages such as OD and ID Micrometers, Verniers, Gage Blocks, etc.
- Continual use of hand tools for various operations – drill, tap, ream, file, chip, fit, straighten, etc.
- Operate small machines – lathe, grinder, drill press, belt sander, etc.
- Solid understanding of Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Comfortable using computers for basic functions such as communication and booking travel.
- Operation Overhead Crane and Forklifts to stack units for machine assembly.

Travel Requirements
This position requires extensive travel
- Be willing and able to travel 90% based on current projected business needs.
- Travel schedules will include approximately two weeks on the road at a time and home every other weekend.
- Must have the flexibility to make quick adjustments to travel arrangements based on customer or company needs.
- Travel is primarily domestic, with opportunities for international assignments.
- Travel requirements may change based on company workload and capacity.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- This position requires the ability to perform hands-on work in industrial and manufacturing environments.
- Regularly use hands for handling equipment, tools, and components.
- Frequently reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
- Perform work requiring color vision.
- While performing field service duties, employees may frequently work near moving mechanical equipment and may occasionally encounter wet or humid conditions, elevated work areas, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, electrical hazards, and vibration. The work environment is typically loud.
