WSET Instructional Designer

Under the guidance of the Instructional Design and Content Development Manager, design and develop accessible, engaging and high-quality digital learning resources for global audiences, for use across online, blended and face-to-face learning environments. Apply accessibility, inclusive design and adult learning principles to support the continuous improvement of WSET courses through the ADDIE methodology.
Contribute to the effective integration of classroom, online and blended learning approaches across WSET programmes. Work collaboratively with third-party providers where required, helping to ensure externally developed content meets WSET standards for quality, accessibility and learner experience.
Maintain a good working knowledge of developments in WSET’s Learning Management System (Canvas) and content authoring tools such as genially and Articulate 360, and contribute to a community of practice within the Product department, sharing knowledge and supporting continuous improvement in learning design and delivery.
Key duties and responsibilities
Analysis (A)
- Apply needs analysis techniques to identify learner requirements and learning objectives, with consideration for accessibility and inclusive practice.
- Collaborate with Research & Development teams to gather information that supports curriculum and course design.
- Work with Project management to support the timely planning and delivery of instructional content.
- Use learner personas and other available learner insight to inform course content and delivery approaches.
- Contribute to project planning and scoping for learning design work, in line with agreed priorities and objectives.
- Keep up to date with developments and good practice in digital, blended, synchronous and asynchronous learning
- Participate in relevant professional learning opportunities and share insight with colleagues where appropriate.
Design (D)
- Apply instructional design, accessibility and inclusive design principles when creating course components for a range of learning environments.
- Work collaboratively with the Educational Development and Qualifications teams to ensure content for face-to-face, online and virtual delivery accurately reflects curriculum and assessment requirements.
- Design learning content and activities that support engagement, clarity and effective progression for a diverse global audience.
- Develop content that incorporates a range of approaches to representation, engagement and knowledge checking, where appropriate.
- Design content that supports flexible learning and enables learners to demonstrate understanding in a variety of ways.
- Support the implementation of content architecture frameworks to ensure learning materials are structured consistently, enable efficient content reuse and maintenance, and support scalable course development across delivery formats. Contribute to the review of learning design approaches, tools and technologies to support effective course delivery and learner experience.

Development (D)
- Design and develop learning materials for classroom, virtual and online delivery across relevant WSET subject areas.
- Brief and commission content from Research & Development teams or external subject matter experts where required, to support subject accuracy.
- Use authoring tools such as genially and Articulate 360 to create interactive, engaging and accessible learning materials.
- Collaborate with external suppliers where required, to produce multimodal content in line with WSET brand guidelines.
- Support the coordination of work with external suppliers to help ensure projects are delivered to agreed timelines, scope and quality standards.
- Ensure Content Operations team are accurately briefed with product scope and content to facilitate editorial review processes.
- Use established and emerging learning technologies appropriately to enhance learner understanding and engagement.
- Develop materials that support learner autonomy and effective independent study through clear structure and flexible delivery methods.
- Work collaboratively with third-party providers where required to support the development of engaging and accessible learning experiences.
Implementation (I)
- Support the Online Classroom and Educator Development teams by providing guidance on the structure, intent and use of course content to support effective rollout.
- Contribute to the handover and implementation of new or updated learning content across relevant teams.
- Collaborate with IT and Project teams to ensure development scalability and seamless user experience.
- Contribute to the annual review and update of learning materials, as well as to ad hoc updates where required.
- Support the localisation and adaptation of learning content where appropriate.
Evaluation (E)
- Review the effectiveness of formative assessments and learning activities following rollout.
- Under guidance, use qualitative and quantitative learner data to evaluate course effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
- Apply evaluation findings to update and improve course materials and delivery methods on an ongoing basis.
- Contribute to the review of content delivery tools, technologies and formats to support continuous improvement.
- Participate in course review and improvement activity, contributing ideas and feedback to address learning design challenges.
- Support a culture of continuous improvement by responding constructively to feedback and contributing to iterative course development.
Contribute to the successful overall operation of the Trust by undertaking such other tasks as requested.
Person specification
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrable experience in instructional design and/or the creation of learning content.
- Experience of working with subject matter experts to develop accurate and effective learning content.
- Experience of using at least one major Learning Management System, preferably Canvas.
- Competence in using digital authoring tools, preferably genially and the Articulate 360 suite.
- Good knowledge of adult learning principles, pedagogy and effective approaches to course design and delivery.
- Understanding of accessible and inclusive course design principles and their practical application.
- Ability to develop high-quality learning content in line with house style, brand and editorial guidelines.
- Experience of collaborating effectively with colleagues across teams and disciplines.
- Strong communication skills, including high-quality written English.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and contribute effectively to project delivery.

Desirable Criteria
- Familiarity with a broad range of digital authoring tools and learning technologies.
- Ability to interpret learner engagement data and apply findings to improve content.
- Understanding of editorial processes and quality standards for learning content.
- Certification in relevant instructional design or eLearning development programs.
- Experience of working in further education, adult education or vocational education and training settings.
- Experience of working with project management methodology, preferable Agile.
- Knowledge of wine, spirits, beer and/or sake production.
- Experience working with content in languages other than English.

Salary
£22,000-25,000 per annum (Part time - working 22.5 hours flexibly across Monday to Friday)
The advertised salary is based on a London location and will vary for candidates based elsewhere.
Please note that WSET is not currently able to sponsor employment visas for this role. Candidates will need to have an existing right to work in the UK at the time of application and for the duration of their employment.
