Job Description: Insurance Manager
About the Role
This newly created Insurance Manager role will establish and lead the insurance function at Smiths Detection, following its acquisition by CVC Capital Partners. As the company’s first dedicated Insurance Manager, you will:
- Develop and manage the global insurance programme.
- Provide strategic oversight of all insurance-related activities.
- Act as the primary liaison between the business, brokers, and the insurance market.
- Protect the organisation’s assets and manage risk exposure across international operations.
- Support commercial growth through expert guidance on insurance matters related to contracts, M&A activity, and new market entry.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for the following key tasks:
Global Insurance Management
- Own the end-to-end global insurance process to achieve the optimal outcome, including:
- Leading the annual renewal process, engaging with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Overseeing global underwriting data collection and creating insurance submissions while ensuring compliance with Insurance Act 2015.
- Liasing with brokers and insurers to support negotiations.
- Running post-placement activities such as:
- Premium allocation and payment.
- Distribution of certificates.
- Management of U.S. audits.

- Provide technical advice on insurance clauses within business contracts.
Claims & Risk Management
- Manage claims, liaising between the business, broker, and insurers to secure favourable outcomes.
- Build strong relationships with claims adjusters, insurers, and third-party claims-related parties.
- Conduct insurance gap analyses to support the Senior Leadership Team during principal risk reviews.
M&A and New Market Support
- Provide insurance due diligence and integration support for M&A opportunities.
- Offer guidance on insurance considerations for entry into new products and end-markets.
Costs & Standardisation
- Manage global insurance costs, balancing premium optimisation with appropriate risk management.
- Standardise and simplify information requirements to streamline the annual insurance process, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Collect and review insurance-related data from global sites.
Stakeholder Reporting
- Provide feedback to Smiths Detection management team and CVC (as required) on:
- Renewal strategy and outcomes.
- Material updates in the insurance market.
Requirements
Experience & Qualifications
You will hold at least 5 years’ experience in the insurance industry, with a focus on:
- Managing global insurance programmes within:
- Manufacturing
- Engineering
- Aviation sectors.
- Experience in reviewing and negotiating insurance terms in business contracts.
- Hands-on experience in insurance claim management is preferred.

- Ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong team player with experience building productive cross-border and cross-cultural relationships.
- Skilled at working with stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) with meticulous attention to detail.
- Preferred qualification: Dip CII.
- A practical understanding of accounting impacts of insurance decisions (gained through experience or formal qualifications).
